The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) is taking significant steps to foster a culture of sustainability among the younger generation in Abu Dhabi. By launching a series of initiatives, the DoE aims to promote awareness and conservation efforts that support the UAE’s ambitious 2050 net-zero goals.

Education at the Core

Central to the DoE’s strategy is the Abu Dhabi Demand Side Management and Energy Rationalization Strategy 2030, which seeks to cut electricity consumption by 22% and water consumption by 32% by 2030. The Behavioural Change program is a cornerstone of this strategy, focusing on enhancing policy effectiveness and encouraging energy and water-efficient practices.

Eng. Ahmed Juma Al Falasi, Acting Executive Director of the Energy Efficiency Sector at DoE, emphasized the role of education:

Our new initiatives aim to educate and empower individuals, creating a society that is highly aware of the importance of rationalizing electricity and water consumption and how to conserve them.

Engaging the Next Generation

The DoE’s collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) led to the creation of the Children’s Kit initiative. Nearly 2,000 students received kits designed for two age groups, filled with guides on sustainable living and practical tools like water-efficient showerheads and solar-powered chargers. This initiative not only provides essential knowledge but also instills a sense of responsibility and promotes efficient habits from a young age.

Innovative Learning Tools

Furthering its commitment to education, the DoE introduced “EnergiX,” a gamified learning tool available on Apple and Android devices. This interactive app educates children and their parents about the importance of conserving energy and water through engaging gameplay. By making sustainability education fun, the DoE is helping to embed these critical values in the next generation, ensuring they carry these lessons forward.

These initiatives by the DoE are pivotal in shaping a more sustainable future for Abu Dhabi, inspiring young minds to take part in achieving environmental conservation and energy efficiency.
