LEGO’s Net-Zero Drive: Suppliers in the Spotlight
The LEGO Group has launched a new Supplier Sustainability Programme, crucial for cutting carbon emissions in its supply chain. Recognizing that over 99% of its emissions come from external operations, LEGO is pushing suppliers to meet new sustainability targets by 2026.
LEGO’s commitment to reducing its emissions by 37% by 2032 and achieving net-zero by 2050 hinges on significant emission cuts from its suppliers.
Annette Stube, Chief Sustainability Officer at LEGO Group, stated:
“A net-zero world is simply not possible unless we find solutions that are greater than our own operations. We will not be able to meet our sustainability targets alone – we have to work in partnership with our suppliers. We want children to inherit a healthy planet and there’s no time to waste.“
The Supplier Sustainability Programme builds on the Engage-to-Reduce initiative from 2014, aiming to help suppliers lower their environmental impacts. Key requirements include:
- Data Reporting: Suppliers must provide detailed carbon data for LEGO’s products and services.
- Emission Targets: Suppliers need to show emission reductions by 2026, with further cuts by 2028.
- Collaborative Actions: Suppliers are encouraged to improve efficiency, switch to renewable energy, and find less carbon-intensive transport methods.
Carsten Rasmussen, Chief Operations Officer at LEGO Group, emphasized:
“Sustainability is a license to operate and a requirement of how we do business, including how we select our suppliers. We have ideas and we have a pathway, but we cannot do it alone. We need all our great partners to help us achieve our sustainability targets.“
LEGO’s climate action plan includes increasing solar capacity and introducing an annual Carbon KPI to measure emissions. Investments in sustainable materials and technology rose by 60% in 2023, reflecting LEGO’s urgent drive to reduce its carbon footprint.
