  • Major solar initiative: Microsoft commits to buying all renewable energy from EDP’s SolarNova 8 project, the largest solar effort in Singapore.
  • Long-term collaboration: The 20-year deal reinforces a partnership for clean energy, supporting Microsoft’s renewable energy goals.
  • Support for sustainability: This project aids Singapore’s target of achieving 2GW peak solar energy by 2030.

EDP Renewables (EDPR) and Microsoft are taking significant strides towards clean energy in Singapore. Under a new 20-year agreement, Microsoft will purchase 100% of the renewable energy exported from EDPR’s SolarNova 8 project. This project, which is part of Singapore’s SolarNova program, aims to install up to 200MWp of solar capacity across more than 1,000 public housing buildings and over 100 government-owned structures.

Miguel Stilwell d’Andrade, CEO of EDP and EDPR, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “We are strengthening EDP’s global collaboration with Microsoft through this project and together we are taking a step towards achieving Singapore’s sustainability goals of at least 2GW peak of solar energy by 2030. Contracting with Microsoft is a catalyst for accelerating the energy transition and to continue investing in the region.

This agreement marks the second collaboration between EDPR and Microsoft in Singapore, continuing a partnership that began in 2018. The long-term contract not only supports the development of new solar projects but also aligns with Microsoft’s broader aim of achieving 100% renewable energy across its operations.

Adrian Anderson, General Manager for Renewables and Carbon Free Energy at Microsoft, praised the ongoing partnership, saying, “Microsoft appreciates the global relationship that we’ve built with EDPR, enabling our companies to drive grid decarbonization efforts in Singapore, the US, and Europe. Building our renewable energy portfolio with EDPR ensures that we can continue to secure renewable energy supply to meet our ambitious renewable energy and decarbonization goals.”

By joining forces, EDP and Microsoft are contributing significantly to Singapore’s renewable energy landscape and showcasing a model for sustainable collaboration.
