Portugal’s Renewable Energy Milestone
Portugal’s renewable energy generation hit a record 71% in 2024, marking a significant leap from 61% in 2023, according to grid operator REN.
REN stated, “This achievement highlights the effectiveness of Portugal’s renewable energy initiatives.”
Hydropower led with 28% of the electricity consumed, followed closely by wind at 27%. Solar power, while accounting for 10%, experienced the most significant growth, increasing by 37%. Biomass contributed an additional 6%.

Decline in Natural Gas Dependency
Natural gas consumption dropped 17%, reaching its lowest level since 2003, despite overall electricity use rising to its highest since 2010.
- Natural gas now accounts for only 10% of power production.
- Portugal relies on imports from Nigeria and the U.S. for nearly all its natural gas.
