SUMMARY:High-level Forest and Climate Resilience Forum for Liberia
DESCRIPTION:The Government of Liberia with the support of the Kingdom of Norway and the World Bank is organizing a high-level Forest and Climate Resilience Forum\, on February 2-3\, 2023. The purpose of this Forum is to catalyze renewed commitments and strengthen partnerships in sustainable forest management as a key strategy supporting Liberia’s Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD). \nThe Forum will provide a platform for high-level stakeholders to discuss key areas of progress\, challenges\, and next steps in the forest sector\, using local and regional examples. It will highlight and showcase Liberia’s progress in forest and climate resilience policy\, and tangible successes on the ground in relation to sustainable forest management\, community forestry\, conservation forestry\, among others. The Forum will also explore lessons learnt from other parts of the world and regionally regarding sustainable forest management\, to inform future development of the sector in Liberia. This will ultimately provide possibilities for next steps in advancing forestry together with livelihoods\, agriculture\, climate resilience\, and infrastructure. \nThe President of Liberia\, His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah will address the opening session of the Forum. Others addressing the opening are Mr. Hans Brattskar\, Special Envoy on Climate and Forest\, Kingdom of Norway\, and Mr. Ousmane Diagana\, World Bank Vice President for Western and Central Africa. Other co-conveners of the event are USAID-Liberia\, UNDP\, The Swedish Embassy\, The European Union\, and the Government of the United Kingdom through its Embassy in Liberia. \nThe Forum will bring together about 200 participants and will feature high-level regional and international Ministers and Directors spearheading forest management in their respective countries. The Forum presents an opportunity to take stock of policies and interventions\, deepen understanding of forests’ multi-sector roles\, and generate ideas towards meeting Nationally Determined Commitments (NDCs) from COP26\, and to reconfirm commitments to work with partners and share knowledge in the context of natural resources management driven by comprehensive and scientific approaches to achieve sustainability in shared objectives. \n\n\n\nLiam Marais

SUMMARY:Evaluating the role of low-carbon hydrogen in the future energy system
DESCRIPTION:Low-carbon hydrogen is expected to play a key role in the future energy system\, particularly in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors. Yet several key barriers to adoption remain\, and it is likely that at least three times the hydrogen capacity announced so far will be needed by 2030 to stay on track to hit net-zero targets by 2050. \nIn this Economist Impact insight hour\, join us as we identify the barriers to adoption and pinpoint the practical solutions needed to deploy low-carbon hydrogen at scale and meet imminent emission-reduction targets. To what extent can regulation help to accelerate large-scale hydrogen deployment? What investment is needed into renewable-energy capacity\, grids and infrastructure? Will the creation of collaborative hydrogen hubs be enough to kick-start the hydrogen economy and reduce the fragility of existing global energy markets? What more is needed to make change happen? \nThis Insight Hour is programmed by Economist Impact and hosted by Deloitte. \n\n\n\nLiam Marais

SUMMARY:Getting to Grips with Climate Metrics: A Comprehensive Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Current industry debates around climate investing have raised the urgency of understanding\, measuring\, monitoring\, and mitigating not only financial risks arising from climate change\, but also the impact of investments on climate change. Policy makers and industry bodies have taken a deep interest in climate investing and have proposed several climate metrics to support investors in measuring and monitoring their portfolio’s climate-change exposure and performance. \nThese climate metrics may differ substantially in terms of their scope and objectives\, making it imperative that market participants understand which ones can help in meeting strategy-specific goals and requirements. Investors may also need to consider different metrics at the different stages of their climate-investment process\, adding to the challenges. \nIn this webinar\, our researchers will discuss how market participants can identify and use suitable climate metrics to achieve their climate-investing objectives. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of climate metrics in your investments. \n\n\n\nLiam Marais

SUMMARY:Progress and Challenges to Achieving a Common Taxonomy for Climate Investments
DESCRIPTION:Policymakers from China and the EU discuss current climate investment taxonomies and what is needed to achieve a common worldwide taxonomy. \nAs countries and governments have pursued policies and regulations to fulfill their commitments to achieve a climate-neutral world by mid-century\, they have formulated classification systems or “taxonomies” to define\, guide and measure environmentally sustainable economic activities. Taxonomies have been developed in the EU\, China and around the world to translate green objectives into criteria for investment\, establish how assets and projects are aligned with green objectives and define green activities that can be financed by the financial system. \nIn this free webinar\, two distinguished policymakers will discuss the most well-developed taxonomies currently in place (EU and China); explore the similarities\, differences\, and implementation progress to date; and debate what is still needed to achieve a common taxonomy and harmonization worldwide. What has been the experience to date and where are the gaps\, as countries move from principles to more detailed technical criteria on the path to a green transition? \n\n\n\nLiam Marais

SUMMARY:US Climate Action Summit 2023
DESCRIPTION:What is the US Climate Action Summit?\n\n\n\nBack for its third year\, the US Climate Action Summit unites key leaders in business\, politics and advocacy to drive US climate momentum during Earth Week. \nWe’re hosting an intimate yet innovative program that favours participation\, progress and accountability. \nOur goal for the US Climate Action Summit is to create a participant-led platform that drives measurable outcomes on climate policy and business action\, with attendees at the heart of the agenda. \n\n\nHow is this event different?\n\n\n\nWe know events alone will not change the world. But the people and conversations at them can. We need a little less conversation and a lot more action at events like this. \nWe’ve seen a huge demand from our business\, policy and NGO networks for an open and honest platform that pushes progress and implementation. \nSo we’ve designed an agenda that puts participation at the center of the program by creating an open space for off the record conversations\, carefully curated small-group conversations\, and a series of closed-door implementation sessions that deliver real outcomes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiam Marais

SUMMARY:How Can The Built Environment Drive Social and Environmental Value?
DESCRIPTION:This webinar\, organised by the Financial Times in partnership with JLL\, will delve into the rising importance of social value in the development of a net-zero\, healthy\, and equitable built environment. It will look at the key challenges and tensions between short and long term priorities and how the ecosystem of stakeholders can align and engage in the creation of spaces that are safe\, inclusive\, resilient and sustainable. Our experts will share practical experiences and discuss ways to achieve decarbonisation goals alongside social and financial targets\, explore opportunities for shared value and stakeholder collaboration\, and examine how to improve the human value proposition throughout the entire real estate cycle. \nSocial value is a core part of ESG\, yet there is a gap between ambition and action. Companies typically take a fragmented approach and focus more on the ‘E’ – rather than addressing environmental and social goals in tandem. Those who take a holistic approach across the real estate cycle\, can transform the built environment into a driver of positive change\, for both people and planet\, while accelerating progress and unlocking competitive advantage. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiam Marais
