SUMMARY:Fourth Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:Background\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement are intrinsically linked\, and one cannot be achieved without the other. In the same spirit\, the Secretary-General in a recent address on his 2023 priorities stressed that “Climate action is the 21st century’s greatest opportunity to drive forward all the Sustainable Development Goals.” As such\, maximizing on the interlinkages between the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement by leveraging climate action and SDG synergies has the potential of achieving both agendas faster\, while ensuring a just and equitable future. \nIntegrated planning\, coherent policies\, and economic stimulus investments designed to meet both the SDGs and climate challenges can generate significant co-benefits and speed up progress. Research has shown that aligning actions on climate and SDGs globally can yield up to US$26 trillion before 2030 in economic gains\, produce over 65 million new green jobs\, and save approximately 7 million premature deaths per year. With concerted and coordinated global public and private collaborative efforts\, achievement of all SDGs can be advanced\, trade-offs avoided\, and social disparities reduced. \n\n\nFOURTH GLOBAL CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE AND SDG SYNERGIES\n\nThe Fourth Global Climate and SDG Synergy Conference is convened by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Conference is conducted in association with the 2023 HLPF. It thus also provides delegations the opportunity to reflect their on-going review of progress on achieving the SDGs\, notably SDGs 6\, 7\, 9\, 11\, and 17\, in a wider context of the multiple interlinkages between these goals and global climate action. The Conference will take stock of progress on synergistic action at all levels. It will also shed light on some of key findings and messages from the work of the Expert Group on Climate and SDG Synergies. More specifically\, the Fourth Global Conference on Climate and SDD Synergies will deliver: \n\nA forward-looking summary\, with a set of key recommendations for enhancing synergistic implementation of the SDGs and climate action at the political level as well as practical levels.\nA set of empirical evidence on climate action and the SDGs co-benefits\, including how various stakeholders are progressing in delivering jointly on these two agendas and transitioning towards just\, equitable\, and climate compatible pathways.\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Future farming: can regenerative agriculture cut climate pollution and feed the world?
DESCRIPTION:Our food system is on the frontline in the fight to curb climate change and conserve nature. Food generates one-third of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the United Nations identifies farming as the primary driver of biodiversity loss globally. But a suite of agricultural solutions already exists that can accelerate action towards GHG neutrality while protecting and restoring our natural ecosystems. \nRegenerative agriculture is one approach that farmers are using in the effort to stem GHG emissions while addressing local environmental impacts. It includes management practices that replenish natural ecosystems rather than deplete them\, and is informed by indigenous and traditional farming techniques. But what is the science behind regenerative agriculture and its role in reducing and sequestering GHGs? \nThis insight hour will explore the intersection of science and regenerative agriculture\, with a particular focus on the dairy industry. \nHow can holistic management of soil health\, nutrient cycling\, water use and other factors help the dairy industry reduce GHG emissions\, particularly of methane—which has roughly 80 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide? What are the limitations of regenerative farming? How can dairy farmers adopt science-based practices to cut emissions in a way that stimulates productivity and profitability? How are GHG-neutrality commitments from food companies changing behaviour among their suppliers? And finally\, what other tools and technologies can dairy farmers use to reduce emissions? \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:FT Hydrogen Summit 2023
DESCRIPTION:As energy policy remains at the top of the political agenda\, hydrogen is touted as a critical tool in the net-zero transition. However\, while policy ambitions are increasing globally\, the practical pathway to scaling up clean hydrogen remains unclear. Existing hydrogen production still needs to be decarbonised\, while pertinent questions also remain about the lack of progress on large-scale projects and the availability of cheap renewable power to produce green hydrogen. Against this backdrop\, disagreement continues over which sectors the fuel is best positioned to decarbonise. Can the industry navigate these challenges to make clean hydrogen a permanent feature of the global energy mix? \nNow in its third year\, the FT’s Hydrogen Summit has established itself as the pre-eminent gathering of leading hydrogen executives\, policymakers and financiers. Throughout a comprehensive day of content and networking\, the Summit will once again provide a unique forum for a nuanced discussion of the opportunities and obstacles in harnessing the full power of hydrogen. \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Navigating Climate Credit Risk: Insights from NGFS III for Corporates
DESCRIPTION:Network for Greening of the Financial System (NGFS) climate scenarios have become a financial industry standard. We employ their latest iteration to illustrate the impact on the corporate PD projections from the Moody’s Climate Adjusted Expected Default Frequency model. The model links global and sectoral dynamics with physical risk assessment and emissions at the company level. \nModelling challenges include combining physical risk across climate hazards as well as deriving firm-level metrics from the transition risk implied sectoral pathways.\nRegulators across the globe require usage of different Integrated Assessment Models to characterize transition risk. Our modular approach enables us to quantify the impact of these modelling choices. \n\nClimate Adjusted Corporate PD Modelin a nutshell\nNGFS Scenarios’ Evolution: Net Zero and Nationally Determined Contributions imply lower emissions\n Conceptual challenges for physical risk scoring\n From sectors to the firm level: Moody’s Transition Risk Oligopoly Model\n Does the used IAM matter? SUMMARY:Multinational Enterprises and Climate Change: Fundamental Risks and Big Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:This event aims to present the findings of a new report: “The effect of multinational enterprises on climate change: supply chain emissions\, green technology transfers\, and corporate commitments.” This report brings together the latest available data\, analysis and literature to answer four key questions related to the relationship between MNEs and climate change: \n(1)    What effect do MNEs currently have on climate change\, through their own activities and through their broader supply chains? \n(2)    How do MNEs shape the potential transfer of “green” technology transfers to domestic firms? \n(3)    How committed are leading MNEs currently to transition their supply chains to net-zero emissions by 2050? \n(4)    What types of policies can influence multinational enterprises’ effect on climate change? \nThe event will further discuss what more countries can and should do to shape the behaviors of MNEs as part of their climate change mitigation plans. For this\, there will be an active discussion that will include a representative of a multinational enterprise with an active commitment towards sustainable development\, and Amir Sokolowski\, the Global Director Climate Change\, at CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project)\, which is a not-for-profit charity that runs the global disclosure system for investors\, companies\, cities\, states and regions to manage their environmental impacts. \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance.
