SUMMARY:FT Hydrogen Summit 2023
DESCRIPTION:As energy policy remains at the top of the political agenda\, hydrogen is touted as a critical tool in the net-zero transition. However\, while policy ambitions are increasing globally\, the practical pathway to scaling up clean hydrogen remains unclear. Existing hydrogen production still needs to be decarbonised\, while pertinent questions also remain about the lack of progress on large-scale projects and the availability of cheap renewable power to produce green hydrogen. Against this backdrop\, disagreement continues over which sectors the fuel is best positioned to decarbonise. Can the industry navigate these challenges to make clean hydrogen a permanent feature of the global energy mix? \nNow in its third year\, the FT’s Hydrogen Summit has established itself as the pre-eminent gathering of leading hydrogen executives\, policymakers and financiers. Throughout a comprehensive day of content and networking\, the Summit will once again provide a unique forum for a nuanced discussion of the opportunities and obstacles in harnessing the full power of hydrogen. \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Regional Meeting on Accelerating the Transition to Electric Mobility for Public Transport in Asia and the Pacific
DESCRIPTION:United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in is organizing the Regional Meeting on Accelerating the Transition to Electric Mobility for Public Transport in collaboration with the Department of Transportation\, the Philippines on 24 and 25 May 2023 in Manila. The meeting will be conducted in English language only. \nAchieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement of limiting global warming to well below 2 degree C compared to pre-industrial levels will require rapid decarbonization across all sectors including the transport sector. Transitioning to electric mobility in public transport is one of the policy options to reduce vehicle emissions and dependence on fossil fuel for transport operations. Furthermore\, electric mobility\, improvement of public transport and shifts to renewable energy sources are some of the key transport strategies listed in the nationally determined contributions of Asian countries. \nThe objective of the meeting is to share international\, regional\, and national experiences on transitioning to electric mobility and to raise awareness and enhance capacity of key stakeholders on the development of national policy frameworks on electric mobility. A series of policy-oriented reports on e-mobility in public transport commissioned by ESCAP such as a step-by-step guideline\, case studies on operation of electric buses and the Asia-Pacific Initiative on Electric Mobility will be disseminated. The meeting aims to foster greater collaboration among e-mobility stakeholders from both the public and private sectors in the region. \nParticipants from the Asia-Pacific region\, representatives of development partners and international and regional experts on electric mobility are expected to attend the meeting. \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Tackling the electricity crisis in Europe: emergency intervention or a full revamp?
DESCRIPTION:The energy sector has experienced turmoil in the past two years. Covid-19 lockdowns sharply reduced energy demand\, causing prices to drop. Then the post-pandemic economic rebound increased demand amid supply shortages\, resulting in price hikes. In the last year\, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created further uncertainty in the European policy landscape and energy markets\, with supply disruptions of natural gas leading to record-high electricity prices. \nIn this insight hour\, join us to consider how best to tackle the energy crisis in Europe. Would a reduction in usage of natural gas\, and power overall\, be enough to mitigate supply-side tensions and help avoid scarcity during winter months? Is that reduction even achievable? Given all the factors at play\, what now needs to happen to support Europe in reaching its long-term climate objectives? What can be done to hasten the energy transition\, reduce European dependency in the areas of energy and raw materials\, and improve energy security for national economies? \nThis Insight Hour is programmed by Economist Impact and hosted by Deloitte. \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Evaluating the role of low-carbon hydrogen in the future energy system
DESCRIPTION:Low-carbon hydrogen is expected to play a key role in the future energy system\, particularly in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors. Yet several key barriers to adoption remain\, and it is likely that at least three times the hydrogen capacity announced so far will be needed by 2030 to stay on track to hit net-zero targets by 2050. \nIn this Economist Impact insight hour\, join us as we identify the barriers to adoption and pinpoint the practical solutions needed to deploy low-carbon hydrogen at scale and meet imminent emission-reduction targets. To what extent can regulation help to accelerate large-scale hydrogen deployment? What investment is needed into renewable-energy capacity\, grids and infrastructure? Will the creation of collaborative hydrogen hubs be enough to kick-start the hydrogen economy and reduce the fragility of existing global energy markets? What more is needed to make change happen? \nThis Insight Hour is programmed by Economist Impact and hosted by Deloitte. \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Navigating Energy Pathways for Climate Ambition: The implications of 1.5°C scenarios for Paris-aligned energy transitions
DESCRIPTION:Energy scenarios have a key role to play in guiding the energy system transformation needed to meet the 1.5°C temperature limit under the Paris Agreement. These scenarios can influence investor expectations and policy decisions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA new IISD report aims to provide policy-makers\, investors\, and companies with information on how to align energy decision-making with Paris Agreement goals. It conducts an unprecedented analysis of the most influential modelled pathways consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C. The research shows a high level of agreement among these scenarios with implications for the phase-out of oil and gas and the ramp-up of clean energy deployment and investment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe webinar will provide a first look at the key findings from this authoritative report highlighting the implications of 1.5°C scenarios for fossil fuel phase-out and renewables scale-up\, barriers to those transitions and solutions to such challenges\, and tools for governments and financial institutions to navigate the current energy crisis while maintaining climate ambition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanellists from intergovernmental organizations and the scientific community will reflect on the key findings of the report and discuss its implications for energy decision-making. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTweets by IISD_news\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance.
