SUMMARY:Threading your way out of the policy tangle: coordination for a sustainable and circular textile value chain
DESCRIPTION:The textile value chain is complex and highly international – impacts from policies enacted in one region reverberate across the global value chain. This event will therefore address the role of policymakers in shifting to a sustainable and circular textile value chain. Policymakers should consult with and coordinate key stakeholders to set ambitious and effective sustainability policy that embed the principles of just transition; provide a predictable and clearly enforced policy environment and consider impacts beyond own borders\, particularly in low and middle income supplier countries. New business models should be designed and supported to avoid replicating the same environmental\, social\, and regional impacts that linear business models created\, with policymaking playing a key role to help industry leapfrog. \nThe session will bring together governments and industry representatives from different regions to discuss the impact of emerging policies and strategies on the global value chain\, as well as opportunities for more systematic policy coordination and engagement between policy makers and voluntary textile industry initiatives. \nUNEP will present the key actions and priorities for policymakers from its report Sustainability and Circularity in the Textile Value Chain: A global roadmap\, as well as findings of the EU-funded project: Innovative Business Practices and Economic Models in the Textile Value Chain (InTex)\, in particular on eco-innovation-enabling policies from Kenya\, South Africa and Tunisia. The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) will share initial lessons learned from its work with policy makers and circular pilot projects in Asia\, as well as from partnerships with businesses and stakeholders in Germany. Finally\, examples of sustainable textile policies will be highlighted and their implications discussed\, including concrete implications at the policy level across the EU and beyond. \n\n\n\nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:Evaluating the role of low-carbon hydrogen in the future energy system
DESCRIPTION:Low-carbon hydrogen is expected to play a key role in the future energy system\, particularly in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors. Yet several key barriers to adoption remain\, and it is likely that at least three times the hydrogen capacity announced so far will be needed by 2030 to stay on track to hit net-zero targets by 2050. \nIn this Economist Impact insight hour\, join us as we identify the barriers to adoption and pinpoint the practical solutions needed to deploy low-carbon hydrogen at scale and meet imminent emission-reduction targets. To what extent can regulation help to accelerate large-scale hydrogen deployment? What investment is needed into renewable-energy capacity\, grids and infrastructure? Will the creation of collaborative hydrogen hubs be enough to kick-start the hydrogen economy and reduce the fragility of existing global energy markets? What more is needed to make change happen? \nThis Insight Hour is programmed by Economist Impact and hosted by Deloitte. \n\n\n\nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:Getting to Grips with Climate Metrics: A Comprehensive Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Current industry debates around climate investing have raised the urgency of understanding\, measuring\, monitoring\, and mitigating not only financial risks arising from climate change\, but also the impact of investments on climate change. Policy makers and industry bodies have taken a deep interest in climate investing and have proposed several climate metrics to support investors in measuring and monitoring their portfolio’s climate-change exposure and performance. \nThese climate metrics may differ substantially in terms of their scope and objectives\, making it imperative that market participants understand which ones can help in meeting strategy-specific goals and requirements. Investors may also need to consider different metrics at the different stages of their climate-investment process\, adding to the challenges. \nIn this webinar\, our researchers will discuss how market participants can identify and use suitable climate metrics to achieve their climate-investing objectives. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of climate metrics in your investments. \n\n\n\nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:The SDG Business Breakdown: Learning the Languages of ESG & the SDGs
DESCRIPTION:To efficiently contribute to the creation of a more prosperous planet\, sustainability needs to be embedded in a company’s DNA. This can be a challenging task\, especially for departments who do not directly work on sustainability issues. \nThe UN Global Compact Network USA will host The Business Breakdown of the SDGs webinar series to provide companies with the opportunity to integrate the SDGs into each core function of their business. This series aims to help non-sustainability professionals integrate the Sustainable Development Goals into their work. By ‘breaking down’ a business by function in each webinar\, the series is designed to provide department-specific insight\, knowledge\, and inspiration needed to make a positive impact on the company’s SDG strategy. \nThe series kicks off with a crash course to introduce all business representatives to the seemingly complex world of ESG and the SDGs. This 1-hour crash course will be taught by the leader who coined the term ‘ESG’\, Mr. Paul Clements-Hunt. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the presentation. \nPaul Clements-Hunt founded The Blended Capital Group in March 2012 and remains Non-Executive Chair. He splits his time between home in Nairobi and London where he is a Director of Mishcon Purpose\, the sustainability arm of the UK head-quartered law firm\, Mishcon de Reya LLP. Paul\, trained as a journalist\,created his first company\, Environmental Business Group (EBG) Co.\, Ltd in Bangkok\, Thailand in 1992. For thirty years\, through roles in business\, the United Nations and as an entrepreneur\, his focus has been on how to mobilize finance and capital at scale into sustainable development. Paul has private equity holdings in last mile impact businesses where digital\, technology\, and sustainability developments merge. \n\n\n\nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:UN 2023 Water Conference
DESCRIPTION:Water is a fundamental part of all aspects of life. Water is inextricably linked to the three pillars of sustainable development\, and it integrates social\, cultural\, economic and political values. It is crosscutting and supports the achievement of many SDGs through close linkages with climate\, energy\, cities\, the environment\, food security\, poverty\, gender equality and health\, amongst others. With climate change profoundly affecting our economies\, societies and environment\, water is indeed the biggest deal breaker to achieve the internationally agreed water-related goals and targets\, including those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. \nThe Conference\, co-hosted by the Governments of Tajikistan and the Netherlands\, will feature an opening and closing ceremony\, six plenary meetings and five multi-stakeholder interactive dialogues. It will also feature a number of high-level special events and side events organized by Member States\, the UN system and other stakeholders. \nThe outcome of the Conference will be a summary of the Conference proceedings and new commitments\, pledges and actions by Governments and all stakeholders towards achieving SDG 6 and other water-related goals and targets\, compiled in the Water Action Agenda. \n\nThe UN 2023 Water Conference and the Water Action Agenda will unite the world for water. The key building blocks of the Water Action Agenda are: \n\ncommitment to action\nsustained and scalable implementation\nfollow-up and review processes\n\nThese blocks will enable replication and scaling up of what works and bring successful solutions to global scale. \n\n\n\nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:Tackling the electricity crisis in Europe: emergency intervention or a full revamp?
DESCRIPTION:The energy sector has experienced turmoil in the past two years. Covid-19 lockdowns sharply reduced energy demand\, causing prices to drop. Then the post-pandemic economic rebound increased demand amid supply shortages\, resulting in price hikes. In the last year\, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created further uncertainty in the European policy landscape and energy markets\, with supply disruptions of natural gas leading to record-high electricity prices. \nIn this insight hour\, join us to consider how best to tackle the energy crisis in Europe. Would a reduction in usage of natural gas\, and power overall\, be enough to mitigate supply-side tensions and help avoid scarcity during winter months? Is that reduction even achievable? Given all the factors at play\, what now needs to happen to support Europe in reaching its long-term climate objectives? What can be done to hasten the energy transition\, reduce European dependency in the areas of energy and raw materials\, and improve energy security for national economies? \nThis Insight Hour is programmed by Economist Impact and hosted by Deloitte. \n\n\n\nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:Consultation in Latin America and the Caribbean: nature-positive trade for sustainable agricultural supply chains
DESCRIPTION:Global food systems and agriculture play a key role to end extreme poverty\, deliver food security\, and foster an inclusive and sustainable development. Agriculture is the main support for the livelihoods of more than 500 million smallholders worldwide – many of whom are women – it also feeds 8 billion people and drives economic activity\, accounting for 4% of the global gross domestic product (GDP). \nThe increasing demand for food to fuel a population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050 continues to incentivize agricultural expansion\, converting land and forests areas and being the main driver of deforestation and the associated loss of biodiversity. While trade can help achieve sustainable and resilient food systems\, it is also known to contribute to and exacerbate negative impacts on nature and people. However\, in an economy with over 50% of the global GDP dependent upon nature\, trade can and should be part of the solution to protect and restore nature. \nTo tackle this global challenge\, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is hosting 3 Regional Stakeholders Consultations in 2023\, one in each region: Asia\, Africa\, and Latin America and the Caribbean. The Consultations will be held as part of UNEP’s partnernship in the Trade\, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub) project. \nThe Consultations will convene a diversity of stakeholders to discuss priorities\, challenges and opportunities in the region\, and together identify and provide recommendations for impact-driven and actionable solutions to move towards a sustainable\, fair and inclusive nature-positive trading system that supports countries to: i) achieve sustainable supply chains of agricultural commodities\, ii) facilitate market access to all stakeholders in compliance with regulations that commit to decouple commodities from deforestation\, e.g. EUDR\, and iii) advance national plans for sustainable socio-economic development. \nIn a joint collaboration between UNEP and the International Trade Center (ITC)\, the first Regional Consultation in Latin America and the Caribbean will take place on: \n\nDate and time: 27 and 28 March 2023\, 10:00 – 16:00 BRT \nHybrid format: in-person in Sao Paulo\, Brazil*; and online\nInterpretation: in Portuguese\, Spanish and English\nVenue: to be announced soon\n\nThe Latin America and Caribbean Stakeholders Consultation will aim to: \n\nDeliver actions-oriented recommendations to enable solutions and strengthen multi-stakeholder cooperation for an inclusive and fair nature-positive trading system that promotes sustainable supply chains of agricultural commodities\, focused on: soybean\, beef and cocoa.\nIdentify and increase understanding of emerging opportunities for the region at the biodiversity and trade policy interface\, including regional trade agreements and the recently adopted Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.\n\nThe Consultation will gather: \n\nGovernment entities leading agendas at the trade and environment nexus\, focused on agriculture\, land management and forestry\, biodiversity\, finance\, economy\, industry\, and related areas.\nPolicymakers active in the environment and trade fora.\nPrivate sector: smallholders\, trading cooperatives\, MSMEs\, multinational companies\, industry associations and relevant stakeholders involved in supply chains of agricultural commodities.\nNon-governmental organizations and civil society.\nAcademic and research institutions.\nFinancial institutions.\n\nAdditional information – Trade\, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub) Project \nThe Regional Stakeholders Consultations are part of UNEP Environment and Trade’s partnership in the Trade\, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub)\, a global pioneering and multi-disciplinary project funded by the UK Research and Innovation\, Global Challenges Research Fund. \nThe TRADE Hub has been established to respond to the challenges of unsustainable trade of agricultural commodities\, wild species\, and wild meat; aiming to address the longstanding tension between trade-induced economic growth\, environmental and social impacts. \nThe Hub provides and develops underpinning research and knowledge\, and collaborates with +50 organizations across government entities\, businesses\, farmers\, supply chain actors and consumers\, policymakers\, and finance agencies to deliver solutions that tackle trade-associated environmental degradation\, increased inequality\, and social deprivation. \n\n\n\nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:International Day of Zero Waste 2023
DESCRIPTION:International Day of Zero Waste\nThe International Day of Zero Waste aims to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns\, support the societal shift towards circularity and raise awareness about how zero-waste initiatives contribute to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. \nThe waste sector contributes significantly to the triple planetary crisis of climate change\, biodiversity and nature loss\, and pollution. Humanity generates an estimated 2.24 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually\, of which only 55 per cent is managed in controlled facilities. Every year\, around 931 million tons of food is lost or wasted and up to 14 million tons of plastic waste enters aquatic ecosystems. \nZero-waste initiatives can foster sound waste management and minimize and prevent waste\, helping to address the triple planetary crisis\, protect the environment\, enhance food security and improve human health and well-being. \nAdopting zero waste\nA zero-waste approach entails responsible production\, consumption and disposal of products in a closed\, circular system. This means that resources are reused or recovered as much as possible and that we minimize the pollution to air\, land or water. \nAchieving zero waste requires action at all levels. \nProducts should be designed to be durable and require fewer and low-impact materials. By opting for less resource-intensive production and transport methods\, manufacturers can further limit pollution and waste. Advertising and closely managing demand can further enable zero waste throughout products’ life cycles. \nConsumers can also play a pivotal role in enabling zero waste by changing habits and reusing and repairing products as much as possible before properly disposing of them. \nWith governments\, communities\, industries and other stakeholders increasingly recognizing the potential of zero-waste initiatives\, bolstering waste management and improving recovery systems through finance and policymaking. The Global Strategy for Sustainable Consumption and Production can guide this transition. Established by the United Nations General Assembly\, Member States and stakeholders\, the strategy calls for the adoption of sustainable consumption and production objectives across all sectors by 2030. \n\n\n\nShealyn Brannon
