SUMMARY:Tackling the electricity crisis in Europe: emergency intervention or a full revamp?
DESCRIPTION:The energy sector has experienced turmoil in the past two years. Covid-19 lockdowns sharply reduced energy demand\, causing prices to drop. Then the post-pandemic economic rebound increased demand amid supply shortages\, resulting in price hikes. In the last year\, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created further uncertainty in the European policy landscape and energy markets\, with supply disruptions of natural gas leading to record-high electricity prices. \nIn this insight hour\, join us to consider how best to tackle the energy crisis in Europe. Would a reduction in usage of natural gas\, and power overall\, be enough to mitigate supply-side tensions and help avoid scarcity during winter months? Is that reduction even achievable? Given all the factors at play\, what now needs to happen to support Europe in reaching its long-term climate objectives? What can be done to hasten the energy transition\, reduce European dependency in the areas of energy and raw materials\, and improve energy security for national economies? \nThis Insight Hour is programmed by Economist Impact and hosted by Deloitte. \nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:Consultation in Latin America and the Caribbean: nature-positive trade for sustainable agricultural supply chains
DESCRIPTION:Global food systems and agriculture play a key role to end extreme poverty\, deliver food security\, and foster an inclusive and sustainable development. Agriculture is the main support for the livelihoods of more than 500 million smallholders worldwide – many of whom are women – it also feeds 8 billion people and drives economic activity\, accounting for 4% of the global gross domestic product (GDP). \nThe increasing demand for food to fuel a population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050 continues to incentivize agricultural expansion\, converting land and forests areas and being the main driver of deforestation and the associated loss of biodiversity. While trade can help achieve sustainable and resilient food systems\, it is also known to contribute to and exacerbate negative impacts on nature and people. However\, in an economy with over 50% of the global GDP dependent upon nature\, trade can and should be part of the solution to protect and restore nature. \nTo tackle this global challenge\, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is hosting 3 Regional Stakeholders Consultations in 2023\, one in each region: Asia\, Africa\, and Latin America and the Caribbean. The Consultations will be held as part of UNEP’s partnernship in the Trade\, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub) project. \nThe Consultations will convene a diversity of stakeholders to discuss priorities\, challenges and opportunities in the region\, and together identify and provide recommendations for impact-driven and actionable solutions to move towards a sustainable\, fair and inclusive nature-positive trading system that supports countries to: i) achieve sustainable supply chains of agricultural commodities\, ii) facilitate market access to all stakeholders in compliance with regulations that commit to decouple commodities from deforestation\, e.g. EUDR\, and iii) advance national plans for sustainable socio-economic development. \nIn a joint collaboration between UNEP and the International Trade Center (ITC)\, the first Regional Consultation in Latin America and the Caribbean will take place on: \n\nDate and time: 27 and 28 March 2023\, 10:00 – 16:00 BRT \nHybrid format: in-person in Sao Paulo\, Brazil*; and online\nInterpretation: in Portuguese\, Spanish and English\nVenue: to be announced soon\n\nThe Latin America and Caribbean Stakeholders Consultation will aim to: \n\nDeliver actions-oriented recommendations to enable solutions and strengthen multi-stakeholder cooperation for an inclusive and fair nature-positive trading system that promotes sustainable supply chains of agricultural commodities\, focused on: soybean\, beef and cocoa.\nIdentify and increase understanding of emerging opportunities for the region at the biodiversity and trade policy interface\, including regional trade agreements and the recently adopted Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.\n\nThe Consultation will gather: \n\nGovernment entities leading agendas at the trade and environment nexus\, focused on agriculture\, land management and forestry\, biodiversity\, finance\, economy\, industry\, and related areas.\nPolicymakers active in the environment and trade fora.\nPrivate sector: smallholders\, trading cooperatives\, MSMEs\, multinational companies\, industry associations and relevant stakeholders involved in supply chains of agricultural commodities.\nNon-governmental organizations and civil society.\nAcademic and research institutions.\nFinancial institutions.\n\nAdditional information – Trade\, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub) Project \nThe Regional Stakeholders Consultations are part of UNEP Environment and Trade’s partnership in the Trade\, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub)\, a global pioneering and multi-disciplinary project funded by the UK Research and Innovation\, Global Challenges Research Fund. \nThe TRADE Hub has been established to respond to the challenges of unsustainable trade of agricultural commodities\, wild species\, and wild meat; aiming to address the longstanding tension between trade-induced economic growth\, environmental and social impacts. \nThe Hub provides and develops underpinning research and knowledge\, and collaborates with +50 organizations across government entities\, businesses\, farmers\, supply chain actors and consumers\, policymakers\, and finance agencies to deliver solutions that tackle trade-associated environmental degradation\, increased inequality\, and social deprivation. \nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:International Day of Zero Waste 2023
DESCRIPTION:International Day of Zero Waste\nThe International Day of Zero Waste aims to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns\, support the societal shift towards circularity and raise awareness about how zero-waste initiatives contribute to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. \nThe waste sector contributes significantly to the triple planetary crisis of climate change\, biodiversity and nature loss\, and pollution. Humanity generates an estimated 2.24 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually\, of which only 55 per cent is managed in controlled facilities. Every year\, around 931 million tons of food is lost or wasted and up to 14 million tons of plastic waste enters aquatic ecosystems. \nZero-waste initiatives can foster sound waste management and minimize and prevent waste\, helping to address the triple planetary crisis\, protect the environment\, enhance food security and improve human health and well-being. \nAdopting zero waste\nA zero-waste approach entails responsible production\, consumption and disposal of products in a closed\, circular system. This means that resources are reused or recovered as much as possible and that we minimize the pollution to air\, land or water. \nAchieving zero waste requires action at all levels. \nProducts should be designed to be durable and require fewer and low-impact materials. By opting for less resource-intensive production and transport methods\, manufacturers can further limit pollution and waste. Advertising and closely managing demand can further enable zero waste throughout products’ life cycles. \nConsumers can also play a pivotal role in enabling zero waste by changing habits and reusing and repairing products as much as possible before properly disposing of them. \nWith governments\, communities\, industries and other stakeholders increasingly recognizing the potential of zero-waste initiatives\, bolstering waste management and improving recovery systems through finance and policymaking. The Global Strategy for Sustainable Consumption and Production can guide this transition. Established by the United Nations General Assembly\, Member States and stakeholders\, the strategy calls for the adoption of sustainable consumption and production objectives across all sectors by 2030. \nShealyn Brannon

We will feature stories and solutions from industry leaders who are adopting cost-sensitive environmental solutions in their businesses. \n• Unlocking the value of sustainability: Companies in the diving industry are interested in finding ways to increase the visibility of and market sustainability. Research shows that post-pandemic dive tourists are interested in more sustainable holiday options and are willing to pay more for sustainability. However\, they need more transparency around environmentally-friendly options to avoid greenwashing. The event will focus on how authenticity in showcasing environmental ethos and practices can help promote sustainability and avoid greenwashing. The event will showcase stories of businesses that have benefited from sustainability by unlocking higher-value products that also deliver on local conservation needs\, connecting with local governments and partners on conservation efforts\, and unexpectedly enjoying financial benefits as a result. \nSpeakers \nModerator: Natalie Harms\, Secretariat of the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA)\, UN Environment Programme \nPanelists: \n\nElaine Wallace – Owner\, Bunaken Oasis Resort and Spa (Green Fins DIgital Member)\nPaul Tanner – Territory Director\, PADI (Training agency)\nJohn Thet – CEO\, UW360 (Media)\nDavid McClinton – Owner and Director\, Ceningan Divers and Resort (Green Fins Top 10 Certified Member)\nBo Mancao – Underwater Imager\nAdam Broadbent – Founder & CEO\, ZuBLu (booking platform)\n\nKey takeaways of the event \nThe event offers a unique opportunity to connect with leaders in sustainability and gain valuable insights into sustainable practices in the diving industry. SUMMARY:Progress and Challenges to Achieving a Common Taxonomy for Climate Investments
DESCRIPTION:Policymakers from China and the EU discuss current climate investment taxonomies and what is needed to achieve a common worldwide taxonomy. \nAs countries and governments have pursued policies and regulations to fulfill their commitments to achieve a climate-neutral world by mid-century\, they have formulated classification systems or “taxonomies” to define\, guide and measure environmentally sustainable economic activities. Taxonomies have been developed in the EU\, China and around the world to translate green objectives into criteria for investment\, establish how assets and projects are aligned with green objectives and define green activities that can be financed by the financial system. \nIn this free webinar\, two distinguished policymakers will discuss the most well-developed taxonomies currently in place (EU and China); explore the similarities\, differences\, and implementation progress to date; and debate what is still needed to achieve a common taxonomy and harmonization worldwide. What has been the experience to date and where are the gaps\, as countries move from principles to more detailed technical criteria on the path to a green transition? \nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:The SDG Business Breakdown: Sales & Marketing
DESCRIPTION:To efficiently contribute to the creation of a more prosperous planet\, sustainability needs to be embedded in a company’s DNA. This can be a challenging task\, especially for departments that do not directly work on sustainability issues. \nThe UN Global Compact Network USA will host The Business Breakdown of the SDGs webinar series to provide companies with the opportunity to integrate the SDGs into each core function of their business. SUMMARY:US Climate Action Summit 2023
DESCRIPTION:What is the US Climate Action Summit?\n\n\n\nBack for its third year\, the US Climate Action Summit unites key leaders in business\, politics and advocacy to drive US climate momentum during Earth Week. \nWe’re hosting an intimate yet innovative program that favours participation\, progress and accountability. \nOur goal for the US Climate Action Summit is to create a participant-led platform that drives measurable outcomes on climate policy and business action\, with attendees at the heart of the agenda. \n\n\nHow is this event different?\n\n\n\nWe know events alone will not change the world. But the people and conversations at them can. We need a little less conversation and a lot more action at events like this. \nWe’ve seen a huge demand from our business\, policy and NGO networks for an open and honest platform that pushes progress and implementation. \nSo we’ve designed an agenda that puts participation at the center of the program by creating an open space for off the record conversations\, carefully curated small-group conversations\, and a series of closed-door implementation sessions that deliver real outcomes. \n\n\n\n\nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:How Can The Built Environment Drive Social and Environmental Value?
DESCRIPTION:This webinar\, organised by the Financial Times in partnership with JLL\, will delve into the rising importance of social value in the development of a net-zero\, healthy\, and equitable built environment. It will look at the key challenges and tensions between short and long term priorities and how the ecosystem of stakeholders can align and engage in the creation of spaces that are safe\, inclusive\, resilient and sustainable. Our experts will share practical experiences and discuss ways to achieve decarbonisation goals alongside social and financial targets\, explore opportunities for shared value and stakeholder collaboration\, and examine how to improve the human value proposition throughout the entire real estate cycle. \nSocial value is a core part of ESG\, yet there is a gap between ambition and action. Companies typically take a fragmented approach and focus more on the ‘E’ – rather than addressing environmental and social goals in tandem. Those who take a holistic approach across the real estate cycle\, can transform the built environment into a driver of positive change\, for both people and planet\, while accelerating progress and unlocking competitive advantage. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShealyn Brannon

SUMMARY:4th global conference of the Sustainable Food Systems Programme
DESCRIPTION:Humankind is confronted with multiple deeply rooted and interlinked crises\, including in relation to climate\, biodiversity\, conflict\, energy\, consumer prices\, food insecurity\, malnutrition and health. \nGlobal food systems challenges call for a profound and swift transformation of how we produce\, process\, retail\, and consume food and dispose organic waste. \nThe UN Secretary-General’s Food Systems Summit (UN FSS) in September 2021 created important momentum for this transformation. \nContributing to the 2023 Stock-Taking Moment of the UN FSS follow-up process\, this conference will look at how food systems need to be transformed to overcome these crises in order to minimize the risk of global collapse and achieve the SDGs. \nBased on concrete examples\, the conference will look at main barriers and bottlenecks in relation to food systems transformation\, discuss solutions and release a series of actionable recommendations with a focus on the following five key levers: \n\nGlobal\, regional\, national\, sub-national inclusive governance to set the foundations for applying a holistic/integrated approach towards sustainable food systems.\nCollaborative\, multisectoral\, integrated policy actions based on a holistic approach to materialize the transformation we need: shifting consumption and production patterns in our food systems.\nMobilizing means of implementation\, including financing.\nMetrics and accountability frameworks to measure transformation.\nMission-oriented research and innovation\, in collaboration with the private sector.\n\nTo do so\, the conference will provide a space for countries\, coalitions\, the Food Systems Coordination Hub’s “ecosystem of support” and other food systems actors to present transformational actions\, tools and initiatives linked to the implementation of National Pathways for Food Systems Transformation that have emerged since the UN FSS and discuss how such actions can be further scaled up to ensure that we collectively attain our sustainable food systems pathways by 2030. \nIn addition\, the conference will discuss how progress on shaping sustainable\, resilient\, healthy and inclusive food systems in the context of the UN FSS follow-up process can be properly measured in view of the UN FSS 2023 Stock-Taking Moment and beyond. \n\n\n\nShealyn Brannon
