SUMMARY:The Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence: A Pathway towards Sustainable Development - High-Level Meetings with Partners
DESCRIPTION:Background\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Africa Centers of Excellence project (ACEs) is the first large scale regional program funded by the World Bank in the higher education sector in Africa. It addresses higher-level skills development needs and innovative research requirements for the continent’s priority development sectors in five main areas: science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM); agriculture; health; environment; applied social science and education. Since its start in 2014\, the program has supported over 80 centers in more than 50 universities across 20 countries across the continent. Under the program\, thousands of students –more than one third of whom are female– are enrolled in postgraduate programs geared towards international standards in delivering quality training and regional specializations that are helping to fulfill labor market demands on the continent. The ACEs are undertaking high impact research that are addressing some of the region’s most pressing development challenges such as food insecurity\, climate change and infectious diseases. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2019\, in order to increase the impact of existing ACEs and extend the program to more centers\, the World Bank\, together with the French Development Agency\, launched the third phase of the program: the “ACE for Development Impact project\, ACE-Impact”. A total of 53 centers in 35 universities across 11 countries –Benin\, Burkina Faso\, Côte d’Ivoire\, Djibouti\, Gambia\, Ghana\, Guinea\, Niger\, Nigeria\, Senegal\, Togo—participate in the ACE-Impact project to improve and accelerate the quality\, quantity and development impact of postgraduate education. These ACEs have developed strong partnerships with universities and industries locally\, regionally and all over the world\, helping to generate support for student’s research programs\, offering internships\, and facilitating their access to the job market. The ACEs are playing a key role in increasing the number of sciences graduates needed to support Africa’s fast-growing economy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn collaboration with the French Development Agency\, AFD (co-financier of ACE-Impact)\, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development\, IRD (facilitating ACEs’ regional networks)\, and the Association of African Universities\, AAU (ACE-Impact Regional Facilitation Unit)\, the World Bank is organizing a two-day high-level event under the theme: “The Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence: A Pathway towards Sustainable Development”. The event will take place at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington\, DC\, on October 17 and 18\, 2022\, and will bring together the ACEs and the most influential decision makers in the development space to discuss the centers’ innovations and best practices at both national and regional levels\, as well as their challenges and opportunities. Following the high-level event\, the ACEs will travel on October 20 and 21\, 2022 to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University for peer-learning and partnership opportunities.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTweets by WorldBank\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Navigating Energy Pathways for Climate Ambition: The implications of 1.5°C scenarios for Paris-aligned energy transitions
DESCRIPTION:Energy scenarios have a key role to play in guiding the energy system transformation needed to meet the 1.5°C temperature limit under the Paris Agreement. These scenarios can influence investor expectations and policy decisions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA new IISD report aims to provide policy-makers\, investors\, and companies with information on how to align energy decision-making with Paris Agreement goals. It conducts an unprecedented analysis of the most influential modelled pathways consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C. The research shows a high level of agreement among these scenarios with implications for the phase-out of oil and gas and the ramp-up of clean energy deployment and investment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe webinar will provide a first look at the key findings from this authoritative report highlighting the implications of 1.5°C scenarios for fossil fuel phase-out and renewables scale-up\, barriers to those transitions and solutions to such challenges\, and tools for governments and financial institutions to navigate the current energy crisis while maintaining climate ambition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanellists from intergovernmental organizations and the scientific community will reflect on the key findings of the report and discuss its implications for energy decision-making. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTweets by IISD_news\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Sustainable Africa: Investment\, Innovation\, and the Future of Global Trade
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of the great economic challenges across Africa and the Global South has been how to leverage natural resources and human capital toward widespread industrialization\, entrepreneurship\, and job creation. As emerging markets worldwide enter a new era of hyper-industrialization driven by advanced technologies and a focus on sustainability\, countries like Namibia are now positioned to advance key sectors like Energy\, Mining\, and Agriculture higher up the value chain. What is required from investors and international business leaders to reshape global supply chains towards sustainability goals and support the transition to technologies such as batteries and hydrogen? How is the Namibian government creating policy frameworks to encourage foreign investment into these sectors and beyond? And what do investors from the US and across the world need to understand about the potential for the African continent to deliver significant value across emerging sectors of the global economy and help scale these innovations around the world? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTweets by BloombergLive\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Transforming Global Supply Chains: The Road to Resilience and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:About This Event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a world characterised by disruption and unprecedented change\, supply-chain and procurement strategies are in a period of upheaval. Companies face a multiplying set of risks\, including conflict\, inflation\, climate change\, shifting regulations and shortages of labour and materials. Today’s supply chains must be robust\, not just efficient. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBusinesses are reassessing their entire value chain and must decide where to invest to increase resilience. This includes reducing financial risk\, building capabilities closer to consumer markets and maintaining multiple sourcing options in case of disruption. Meanwhile\, sustainability is a bigger priority for businesses\, in line with regulation\, reputational risk\, corporate social responsibility goals and\, ultimately\, competitive advantage. Although supply-chain and scope 3 emissions can account for up to 90% of a company’s total\, many organisations are already struggling to meet their direct emissions targets. Where do they start as they try to transform their supply chains? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin chief executives and board leaders for a roundtable discussion\, programmed by Economist Impact and supported by GEP\, to address pressing questions including: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat global trends will have the biggest impact on supply chains in the near-to mid-term? \n\n\n\nHow can businesses embed resilience into their supply chains–what’s working and what isn’t? \n\n\n\nWhere should companies focus immediate efforts to reduce scope 3 emissions? \n\n\n\nHow can companies leverage global supply chain advantages while decreasing exposure to risk?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTweets by EconomistEvents\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Evaluating the role of low-carbon hydrogen in the future energy system
DESCRIPTION:Low-carbon hydrogen is expected to play a key role in the future energy system\, particularly in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors. Yet several key barriers to adoption remain\, and it is likely that at least three times the hydrogen capacity announced so far will be needed by 2030 to stay on track to hit net-zero targets by 2050. \nIn this Economist Impact insight hour\, join us as we identify the barriers to adoption and pinpoint the practical solutions needed to deploy low-carbon hydrogen at scale and meet imminent emission-reduction targets. To what extent can regulation help to accelerate large-scale hydrogen deployment? What investment is needed into renewable-energy capacity\, grids and infrastructure? Will the creation of collaborative hydrogen hubs be enough to kick-start the hydrogen economy and reduce the fragility of existing global energy markets? What more is needed to make change happen? \nThis Insight Hour is programmed by Economist Impact and hosted by Deloitte. \n\n\n\nESG News Editorial Team\n\n\nThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance.
