SUMMARY:Nature’s Frontiers: Achieving Sustainability\, Efficiency\, and Prosperity with Natural Capital
DESCRIPTION:Nearly all types of natural capital—the world’s stock of resources provided by nature—are in decline. The ecosystem services that flow from those natural capital assets – such as fertile soils for crops\, rich ocean life supporting tourism and productive fisheries\, and dense forests for carbon capture – are necessary for life on Earth. \nRecognizing the essential services provided by natural capital\, Nature’s Frontiers: Achieving Sustainability\, Efficiency\, and Prosperity with Natural Capital proposes a novel approach to address these foundational challenges of sustainability. A methodology combining innovative science\, new data sources\, and cutting-edge biophysical and economic models builds sustainable resource efficiency frontiers to assess how countries can sustainably use their natural capital in more efficient ways. The analysis provides recommendations on how countries can better utilize their natural capital to achieve their economic and environmental goals. \nJoin for a presentation from the authors and a panel discussion on the country-level applications of this work. \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Investing with Nature: Deep dive on nature-based solutions in freshwater ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Freshwater is not only indispensable for wildlife\, people and planet\, it is also the habit of a wide variety of fish\, plant and crustacean species. The freshwater ecosystem comprises of lakes\, ponds\, rivers\, streams\, springs\, bogs and wetlands\, and provides transport routes\, hydropower\, irrigation and drinking water\, as well as a wide range of other ecosystem services such as recreation\, landscape and biodiversity. Moreover\, it also helps prevent erosion\, dispose of waste and provides natural protection from flooding. \nHowever\, threats such as pollution\, climate change\, water-related diseases as well as harmful human activities are putting the freshwater ecosystem in danger\, therefore posing significant risks to animals\, the environment\, humans and the economy. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can be a cost-effective method to optimize the economic potential of the ecosystem\, while enhancing its services and preserving biodiversity. For example\, in the case of freshwater ecosystems\, NbS can help build resilience against floods\, combat climate change and support people’s health via clean water. \nThe third deep dive session of the new “Investing in Nature: Exploring Investment Opportunities Across Ecosystems” webinar series – funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH – will explain the importance of water in nature and practical ways to invest in freshwater as a nature-based solution. The panel discussion will focus on the experiences and perspectives of private and civil society actors investing in freshwater-related nature-based solutions. \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Future farming: can regenerative agriculture cut climate pollution and feed the world?
DESCRIPTION:Our food system is on the frontline in the fight to curb climate change and conserve nature. Food generates one-third of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the United Nations identifies farming as the primary driver of biodiversity loss globally. But a suite of agricultural solutions already exists that can accelerate action towards GHG neutrality while protecting and restoring our natural ecosystems. \nRegenerative agriculture is one approach that farmers are using in the effort to stem GHG emissions while addressing local environmental impacts. It includes management practices that replenish natural ecosystems rather than deplete them\, and is informed by indigenous and traditional farming techniques. But what is the science behind regenerative agriculture and its role in reducing and sequestering GHGs? \nThis insight hour will explore the intersection of science and regenerative agriculture\, with a particular focus on the dairy industry. \nHow can holistic management of soil health\, nutrient cycling\, water use and other factors help the dairy industry reduce GHG emissions\, particularly of methane—which has roughly 80 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide? What are the limitations of regenerative farming? How can dairy farmers adopt science-based practices to cut emissions in a way that stimulates productivity and profitability? How are GHG-neutrality commitments from food companies changing behaviour among their suppliers? And finally\, what other tools and technologies can dairy farmers use to reduce emissions? \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:WOAH and UNEP: Nature and Wildlife Health
DESCRIPTION:WOAH and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will host a joint webinar\, “Nature and wildlife health: making the case for investment in Asia and the Pacific”\nHuman\, animal and ecosystem health\, as well as the environment\, are fundamentally interconnected.    \nWildlife and environmental health are often neglected by policy makers\, with insufficient human and financial resources allocated. This webinar will focus on the case for investment to improve environment competencies at the country/territory level through multisectoral collaboration between Veterinary Services and the environment/wildlife sector.  \nThe event will bring together veterinary\, agriculture and environment sector stakeholders. It will focus on the human-animal-ecosystems interface. These are the agricultural and productive spaces where biodiversity loss is declining rapidly\, which is destabilising the ecosystem services on which local people depend for food and livelihoods. This has consequences for all of society.     \nAs such\, we will focus on the value of wild agro-biodiversity\, and particularly fauna – the birds\, bats\, frogs\, crabs\, insects\, rodents\, snakes\, that live in and around the rice fields\, crop farms\, wood plots\, wild borders\, grazing areas\, riverbanks of populated areas in the Asia Pacific region.      \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:FT Hydrogen Summit 2023
DESCRIPTION:As energy policy remains at the top of the political agenda\, hydrogen is touted as a critical tool in the net-zero transition. However\, while policy ambitions are increasing globally\, the practical pathway to scaling up clean hydrogen remains unclear. Existing hydrogen production still needs to be decarbonised\, while pertinent questions also remain about the lack of progress on large-scale projects and the availability of cheap renewable power to produce green hydrogen. Against this backdrop\, disagreement continues over which sectors the fuel is best positioned to decarbonise. Can the industry navigate these challenges to make clean hydrogen a permanent feature of the global energy mix? \nNow in its third year\, the FT’s Hydrogen Summit has established itself as the pre-eminent gathering of leading hydrogen executives\, policymakers and financiers. Throughout a comprehensive day of content and networking\, the Summit will once again provide a unique forum for a nuanced discussion of the opportunities and obstacles in harnessing the full power of hydrogen. \nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance.
