SUMMARY:Climate Risk Insight Hour
DESCRIPTION:Recalibrating what it will take to achieve net-zero\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe pathway to net zero will take significant time and money. Trillions of dollars in investment will be required to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050\, with annual spending needing to increase by 60%. The shift to net zero also invites social\, political and structural changes. It is estimated to create 200m jobs by 2050\, though some 185m jobs may be lost\, according to a study by McKinsey & Company. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs more firms work on decarbonisation activities\, the opportunities\, costs\, trade-offs and uneven nature of the transition becomes more apparent. And it is unclear how geopolitical crises\, such as the war in Ukraine\, may affect the pace of the transition to net zero for companies and countries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat short- and long-term social and economic adjustments must be made in the transition to net zero? How do these differ across regions\, sectors and communities? What has been the effect of recent geopolitical events on decarbonisation strategies? Do shocks like the war in Ukraine threaten to upend the sustainability agenda\, or could they hasten its progress? How are business leaders preparing for volatility in the energy sector? And what does this mean for companies’ investment strategies? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTweets by EconomistEvents\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:2nd Asia Pacific Environmental Human Rights Defenders Forum
DESCRIPTION:Environmental human rights defenders (EHRDs) are at the forefront of the triple planetary crises of pollution\, biodiversity loss\, and climate change. All EHRDs\, as individuals and groups who\, in their personal or professional capacity and in a peaceful manner\, strive to protect and promote human rights relating to the environment\, including water\, air\, land\, flora\, and fauna1\, play an essential role in protecting the environment\, supporting the rights of communities to participate in environmental decision making and calling out unsustainable development practices and illegal actions causing environmental harm. Their role is central to realizing the right to a clean\, healthy and sustainable environment: a right that has recently been given universal recognition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing a landmark resolution adopted at the Human Rights Council in 20212\, on 28 July 2022 the United Nations General Assembly recognized\, for the first time\, that a clean\, healthy\, and sustainable environment is a universal human right3. The General Assembly resolution affirms the importance of a clean\, healthy and sustainable environment for the enjoyment of all human rights\, and calls upon States\, international organizations\, business enterprises\, and other relevant stakeholders to scale up efforts to ensure a clean\, healthy\, and sustainable environment for all. There is no time more critical to support and champion the role of EHRDs than now\, to ensure that the right to a healthy environment is implemented for everyone everywhere. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnvironmental defenders continue to be at the forefront of environmental protection\, holding governments and businesses to account for environmental harms and upholding the rights of those most affected by environmental degradation. Environmental defenders fill a vital gap in spotlighting the inaction of primary duty-bearers. Despite the crucial contribution from environmental human rights defenders\, they are rarely recognised and often neglected as significant drivers of sustainable and just social and environmental progress. Instead of lauding the actions of EHRDs\, they are instead frequently subject to violent attacks and reprisals\, stigmatization\, arbitrary detention\, and lawsuits. Environmental defenders who may be activists\, journalists\, Indigenous peoples\, and members of local communities\, who are at the forefront of sustainable development and good environmental governance\, are often targeted and harassed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmong the 615 human rights defender attacks linked to Business and Human Rights tracked in 2021\, nearly 70% were against climate\, land\, and environmental rights defenders4. Data demonstrated that while attacks against EHRDs happen in every region of the world\, Asia Pacific was the most affected region in 2021 with 247 cases. Most attacks occurred in India (49) and the Philippines (44). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTweets by UNEP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Navigating Energy Pathways for Climate Ambition: The implications of 1.5°C scenarios for Paris-aligned energy transitions
DESCRIPTION:Energy scenarios have a key role to play in guiding the energy system transformation needed to meet the 1.5°C temperature limit under the Paris Agreement. These scenarios can influence investor expectations and policy decisions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA new IISD report aims to provide policy-makers\, investors\, and companies with information on how to align energy decision-making with Paris Agreement goals. It conducts an unprecedented analysis of the most influential modelled pathways consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C. The research shows a high level of agreement among these scenarios with implications for the phase-out of oil and gas and the ramp-up of clean energy deployment and investment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe webinar will provide a first look at the key findings from this authoritative report highlighting the implications of 1.5°C scenarios for fossil fuel phase-out and renewables scale-up\, barriers to those transitions and solutions to such challenges\, and tools for governments and financial institutions to navigate the current energy crisis while maintaining climate ambition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanellists from intergovernmental organizations and the scientific community will reflect on the key findings of the report and discuss its implications for energy decision-making. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTweets by IISD_news\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere ESG risk leaders connect\, exchange ideas and make vital steps towards the new future of finance.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe ESG & Climate Risk Summit USA is taking place in New York this October gathering senior ESG risk management and investment decision makers from asset managers\, hedge funds\, life insurance firms\, pension funds and investment banks in the USA. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith an agenda steered by the Risk.net editorial team and our global advisory board and covering the most pressing issues facing ESG risk professionals\, you will leave with new ideas\, new connections and a new perspective on ESG and climate risk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKey 2022 themes:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNET ZERO \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAs the ESG trend continues to grow\, more clients want assurance that their portfolios are not contributing to climate change.  As a result\, banks\, asset managers\, and funds will want to consider:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarbon pollution by company Carbon pollution by sector Carbon offsets \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCARBON DISCLOSURE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWith the growing demand for ESG data in order to become more net-zero\, organizations are needed to participate in the climate movement.  It is important for companies to give information on their carbon pollution in three tiers:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScope 1 – direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions Scope 2 – indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions Scope 3 – indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the value chain of a company \n\n\n\n Scope 3 disclosure is the hardest to monitor and we will discuss how to improve all forms of disclosure.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nESG DATA \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n In addition to carbon disclosure data\, there are other aspects of ESG that can inform investors on a company’s impact on the climate and their financial outlook.  This includes data such as:  \n\n\n\nBoard/leadership diversity Human rights Water stress levels \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCLIMATE RISK MODELING \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhether we like it or not\, climate change is already here.  What is important at this point is minimizing its impact and determining risk through scenario analysis.  Climate risk modeling will help determine impacts on company balance sheets from paying damages\, losses\, or reductions in future potential profits.  These are all impacted by growing:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExtreme weather events Shortages impacting supply chain Sea level rise/flooding \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIMPACT INVESTING \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAsset owners and investors are choosing to use their capital for the greater good.  Companies and individual investors can be influential by:  \n\n\n\nDivesting from heavy polluters Investing in heavy polluters to influence company decisions from within Investing in climate solutions\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPOLICY \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nUSA is much more ahead of other global regions when it comes to imposing climate friendly regulations.  We will seek to explore what other regulations are expected in the future and how to stay compliant.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:Climate Bonds Connect 2022 - Global Conference London
DESCRIPTION:Global Conference – 20 October 2022\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the 7th year running\, our Climate Bonds annual conference\, now part of the Climate Bonds CONNECT event series\, continues to frame the global discourse and agenda on climate finance.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs climate impacts batter communities on all continents\, scientists agree we are facing a climate emergency and the window of opportunity to align our economies to a safer 1.5-degree pathway is closing fast. With so much volatility – where concerns about our planet’s future and its climate intersect with petrostate wars; food shortages; health pandemics; species extinction; cost of living increases and more\, we have to find solutions fast. It will not be easy\, but there is hope.  The majority of the world’s institutional investors are aware of the risk such volatility poses to their portfolios if action is not taken. They have a mandate to ensure risk is mitigated over the long term – and they want to act.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUnder the theme ‘Mobilising $5trillion of Climate Bonds per year by 2025\, this year’s Climate Bonds Global Conference will include discussion sessions with opportunity and solutions-driven conversations teasing out the most relevant topics that bridge science\, policy and finance. Top speakers\, thought leaders\, decision-makers and influencers will discuss the challenges and current trends that shape the future of green finance in emerging and developed markets\, including topics on taxonomies\, policy guidance and transition pathways. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClimate Bonds Connect 2022: Combining the power of in-person and with the reach of online participation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Global Conference benefits from a hybrid (online and in-person invitation only) format\, allowing for a wider global audience to be connected to the discussions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe event will gather investors; asset owners; governments; banks; issuers; regulators among others and provide ample opportunity for networking and building connections. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTweets by ClimateBonds\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. SUMMARY:The Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence: A Pathway towards Sustainable Development - High-Level Meetings with Partners
DESCRIPTION:Background\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Africa Centers of Excellence project (ACEs) is the first large scale regional program funded by the World Bank in the higher education sector in Africa. It addresses higher-level skills development needs and innovative research requirements for the continent’s priority development sectors in five main areas: science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM); agriculture; health; environment; applied social science and education. Since its start in 2014\, the program has supported over 80 centers in more than 50 universities across 20 countries across the continent. Under the program\, thousands of students –more than one third of whom are female– are enrolled in postgraduate programs geared towards international standards in delivering quality training and regional specializations that are helping to fulfill labor market demands on the continent. The ACEs are undertaking high impact research that are addressing some of the region’s most pressing development challenges such as food insecurity\, climate change and infectious diseases. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2019\, in order to increase the impact of existing ACEs and extend the program to more centers\, the World Bank\, together with the French Development Agency\, launched the third phase of the program: the “ACE for Development Impact project\, ACE-Impact”. A total of 53 centers in 35 universities across 11 countries –Benin\, Burkina Faso\, Côte d’Ivoire\, Djibouti\, Gambia\, Ghana\, Guinea\, Niger\, Nigeria\, Senegal\, Togo—participate in the ACE-Impact project to improve and accelerate the quality\, quantity and development impact of postgraduate education. These ACEs have developed strong partnerships with universities and industries locally\, regionally and all over the world\, helping to generate support for student’s research programs\, offering internships\, and facilitating their access to the job market. The ACEs are playing a key role in increasing the number of sciences graduates needed to support Africa’s fast-growing economy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn collaboration with the French Development Agency\, AFD (co-financier of ACE-Impact)\, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development\, IRD (facilitating ACEs’ regional networks)\, and the Association of African Universities\, AAU (ACE-Impact Regional Facilitation Unit)\, the World Bank is organizing a two-day high-level event under the theme: “The Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence: A Pathway towards Sustainable Development”. The event will take place at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington\, DC\, on October 17 and 18\, 2022\, and will bring together the ACEs and the most influential decision makers in the development space to discuss the centers’ innovations and best practices at both national and regional levels\, as well as their challenges and opportunities. Following the high-level event\, the ACEs will travel on October 20 and 21\, 2022 to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University for peer-learning and partnership opportunities.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTweets by WorldBank\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nESG News Editorial TeamThe ESG News Editorial Team is comprised of veteran financial journalists and sustainability analysts dedicated to providing real-time\, objective reporting on global ESG regulations\, climate finance\, and corporate governance. DESCRIPTION:REGIONAL SEMINAR ASIA PACIFIC \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKick-starting our Climate Bonds CONNECT 2022 event series is our Asia Pacific Regional Seminar in Singapore\, where we will convene local and regional actors and focus the conversations on the Asia Pacific region’s priorities to accelerate the development of the sustainable debt market.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a region on the front line of climate change impacts\, organisations in Asia have been working relentlessly with significant capacity-building projects in the region.
