Valerie Red-Horse Mohl Named President of Known Holdings

Celebrated Finance and Investment Banking Leader Joins All-Star Leadership Team

Valerie Red-Horse Mohl, a groundbreaking Wall Street leader and long-time ethical investing advocate, has been named President of Known Holdings, a finance company that manages assets, while deploying, structuring and shifting capital to fuel the next economy and close the racial wealth gap.

Red-Horse Mohl is a luminary in financial services, asset management and investment banking. She was the first Native American to start an investment bank on Wall Street, with a storied career financing and managing assets for tribal nations throughout the continental US, among many others. Her new role follows her departure as the CFO of Black-led, 95-year-old East Bay Community Foundation (EBCF), where she is proud to have led the efforts of portfolio investment mission alignment and racial equity/justice prioritization for their assets under management of approximately $800 million.

“Valerie has shown our entire field that it is not only possible for philanthropy to invest assets under management in alignment with our mission, but it is our responsibility to do so,” said Brandi Howard, President and CEO at East Bay Community Foundation. “As Valerie leaves the field and returns to Wall Street full-time, she takes with her a unique perspective gleaned from her work in the philanthropic sector. I look forward to what she and Known Holdings will accomplish and how that will advance our shared commitment to economic justice for Black, Indigenous, and people of color communities in this country.”

Prior to her memorable time with EBCF, she served as the Executive Director/CEO of Social Venture Circle. Last fall, she was appointed to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s inaugural Department Advisory Committee on Racial Equity. She began her career in the high-yield bond department of Drexel Burnham Lambert and is the holder of seven FINRA securities registrations.

“Known Holdings is a comprehensive and ambitious effort to ensure that people of conscience have a robust financial partner where they can grow their businesses—and their wealth,” said Red-Horse Mohl, “while making sure that capital, skills, connections and expertise are available to founders and investors of color, who are the global majority, and the new majority in the U.S.”

Red-Horse Mohl’s appointment as President completes the C-Suite of Known. She joins her fellow co-founders Jim Casselberry, Chief Executive Officer; Nathalie Niño Molina, Chief Strategy Officer; and Ushir Shah, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Technology Officer.

“Like any good investor, Known’s approach centers on the growth of undervalued assets,” said Known CEO Jim Casselberry, “but with Valerie’s exceptional leadership and track record, we’re uniquely positioned to provide powerful, long-term racial, social, environmental and economic impact for clients and founders interested in strong growth and meaningful legacies.”

Red-Horse Mohl is also the founder of Red-Horse Native Productions, Inc., a film and television production company. She is on the Advisory Board Chair of Stanford University’s Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, where she also teaches. Red-Horse Mohl was inducted into the NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners) Hall of Fame in 2008 and was recognized in 2022 as one of the Most Influential Women in the Bay Area. She also serves as the Board Chair of the National Boys and Girls Clubs Native American Services.
