The theme of the conference is “Looking ahead: unlocking access to affordable\, green and resilient housing through innovation.”  Entrepreneurs\, financiers\,  policy makers\, researchers and development partners will discuss innovative ideas and cutting edge solutions to build and finance affordable and green housing around the world. \nThis year’s conference theme is “Looking ahead: unlocking access to affordable\, green and resilient housing through innovation”. While the need for massive investment in the affordable housing sector have never been higher\, countries all over the world are facing difficult macroeconomics conditions\, and households have a lower purchasing power\, while having to deal with increased construction costs and face the impact of climate change. If we want to make a significant\, and lasting impact in addressing the affordable housing gap\, we therefore need to look for innovative ways to build and finance resilient\, green affordable housing. \nThe Global Affordable Housing Conference brings together an audience of high-level officials\, practitioners\, successful entrepreneurs\, academicians from developed countries and emerging markets and provide a unique platform to share information\, learn about the latest innovation and network with peers. \nDuring this 3-day hybrid event you will hear about cutting edge innovation and solutions that are happening and already making an impact and discuss how to best replicate them in different local context. \nThere is no registration fees and online participation is unrestricted. However\, should you wish to attend in person\, please register as soon as possible. Due to the limited capacity\, we will first review your application and then send you an email confirming your in person attendance. SUMMARY:Measuring Development 2023: Mitigating the Risks and Impacts of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Human activity has caused precipitous increases in greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions\, resulting in a one degree warming of average global surface temperatures over the past century.  As the planet responds to rising emissions\, extreme weather events are expected to become more frequent\, distressing both natural and human systems. Researchers and practitioners need innovative analytical tools and data sources to understand how to mitigate the risks and impact of climate change on welfare.  COP27 ended with a compromise to create a fund sourced from developed countries to remedy climate change damages in low income and fragile contexts. This adds to the panoply of climate funds and financial tools geared toward broader action on climate change and the commitment of all development institutions to align their financing with the Paris Agreement. To make sure these investments maximize well-being and protect those who are most at risk\, we need to assess not only what the damages would be and who would be most vulnerable\, but also what mitigation and resilience strategies are most effective. \nTo this end\, the World Bank’s  Development Impact Evaluation (DIME) department and Data Analytics and Tools (DECAT) unit\, the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA)\, and the University of Chicago’s Development Innovation Lab (DIL) will host the ninth annual Measuring Development Conference (MeasureDev). The Mitigating the Risks and Impacts of Climate Change conference will convene researchers at the frontiers of physical and social sciences and decision-makers who influence humanity’s responses to the challenges of climate change.  It will showcase innovative data sources and analytical techniques to better monitor emissions and appraise efforts to mitigate their consequences.  MeasureDev will feature a series of presentations\, panel discussions\, and lightning talks on novel applications of mobile data\, satellite imagery\, remote sensing technologies\, and the computational approaches to make sense of the data to provide more granular\, frequent\, and accurate insights regarding our changing climate and actions to respond.  Participants will learn about the frontiers of measurement using these approaches and gain perspectives from leading academic and industry pioneers. Researchers\, graduate students\, practitioners\, policymakers\, and industry partners are all welcome to submit to register to attend the conference using this form.

SUMMARY:The Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence: A Pathway towards Sustainable Development - High-Level Meetings with Partners
DESCRIPTION:Background\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Africa Centers of Excellence project (ACEs) is the first large scale regional program funded by the World Bank in the higher education sector in Africa. It addresses higher-level skills development needs and innovative research requirements for the continent’s priority development sectors in five main areas: science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM); agriculture; health; environment; applied social science and education. Since its start in 2014\, the program has supported over 80 centers in more than 50 universities across 20 countries across the continent. Under the program\, thousands of students –more than one third of whom are female– are enrolled in postgraduate programs geared towards international standards in delivering quality training and regional specializations that are helping to fulfill labor market demands on the continent. The ACEs are undertaking high impact research that are addressing some of the region’s most pressing development challenges such as food insecurity\, climate change and infectious diseases. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2019\, in order to increase the impact of existing ACEs and extend the program to more centers\, the World Bank\, together with the French Development Agency\, launched the third phase of the program: the “ACE for Development Impact project\, ACE-Impact”. A total of 53 centers in 35 universities across 11 countries –Benin\, Burkina Faso\, Côte d’Ivoire\, Djibouti\, Gambia\, Ghana\, Guinea\, Niger\, Nigeria\, Senegal\, Togo—participate in the ACE-Impact project to improve and accelerate the quality\, quantity and development impact of postgraduate education. These ACEs have developed strong partnerships with universities and industries locally\, regionally and all over the world\, helping to generate support for student’s research programs\, offering internships\, and facilitating their access to the job market. The ACEs are playing a key role in increasing the number of sciences graduates needed to support Africa’s fast-growing economy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn collaboration with the French Development Agency\, AFD (co-financier of ACE-Impact)\, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development\, IRD (facilitating ACEs’ regional networks)\, and the Association of African Universities\, AAU (ACE-Impact Regional Facilitation Unit)\, the World Bank is organizing a two-day high-level event under the theme: “The Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence: A Pathway towards Sustainable Development”. The event will take place at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington\, DC\, on October 17 and 18\, 2022\, and will bring together the ACEs and the most influential decision makers in the development space to discuss the centers’ innovations and best practices at both national and regional levels\, as well as their challenges and opportunities. Following the high-level event\, the ACEs will travel on October 20 and 21\, 2022 to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University for peer-learning and partnership opportunities.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTweets by WorldBank
