The International Energy Agency (IEA) launched a new online resource to track progress towards the energy goals agreed upon at COP28.

Developed in collaboration with UN Climate Change, the online hub will feature the latest data and analysis. This initiative is part of the IEA’s efforts to support governments in achieving the goals set in Dubai.

The IEA is bringing together its extensive global energy datasets, tracking tools, and analytical insights to aid decision-makers and stakeholders. This one-stop shop will display the current status and key resources to drive progress towards the goals.

The webpage, to be updated regularly, reflects the latest data and analysis. It was developed through a new phase of cooperation between the IEA and UN Climate Change.

Nearly 200 countries at COP28 acknowledged the need for net-zero energy emissions by 2050 to maintain the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement. To achieve this overarching objective, they established key collective goals. These include tripling renewable energy capacity, doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030, accelerating the shift away from fossil fuels, and deploying new technologies like low-emission hydrogen and carbon capture.

The new IEA tracking page shows the world’s current standing compared to these goals and the targets for 2030. This will inform decision-makers as they translate promises into action throughout this crucial decade. The page also highlights the latest IEA analysis and policy advice to support governments in achieving these goals and accelerating a secure and inclusive transition to clean energy.

“Countries made historic energy pledges at COP28 to keep the 1.5°C goal achievable. Now, swift and complete implementation is crucial,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. “Tracking progress is vital to these efforts. At the IEA, we believe measurement is key to management. By sharing the latest data, analysis, and policy advice regularly, we aim to support governments in fulfilling their commitments and controlling global warming. This is essential for building a more secure and sustainable energy future.“

At the request of governments, and in collaboration with UN Climate Change and the COP28, COP29, and COP30 Presidencies, the IEA is taking a proactive role in supporting the achievement of the energy-related outcomes established during the first Global Stocktake in Dubai.

This work includes assisting countries in developing their next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement and creating forums for leaders to exchange ideas and best practices. As part of this, the IEA and Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency will hold a new series of High-Level Energy Transition Dialogues throughout 2024 to prepare for the COP29 summit in Baku.
