re.green and Microsoft Double Down on Forest Restoration in the Amazon and Atlantic Forests

  • Doubling the impact: re.green and Microsoft are expanding their commitment to restore forests in the Amazon and Atlantic Forests
  • Reaching new areas: The expanded commitment will restore a total of 33,000 hectares of land
  • Benefits beyond climate action: The project not only removes carbon but also fosters local development and improves social and ecological outcomes

Doubling down the impact:

Less than a year after the start of our first collaboration, we are immensely proud to announce the expansion of our commitment with Microsoft to restore areas in the Amazon and Atlantic Forests. Adding 17,500 hectares to the 15,500 from the first agreement, we will restore a total of 33,000 hectares as part of Microsoft’s carbon removal initiatives—an area equivalent to three times the size of the city of Paris.

This marks the second agreement signed by the two companies to restore parts of the Amazon and Atlantic Forests – two of the most biodiverse biomes on the planet. Microsoft has committed to purchase nearly 3.5 million metric tonnes of CO2 as part of this second agreement.

Key aspects of the expanded partnership:

  • Scope: The project will restore a total of 33,000 hectares of degraded land across three key regions:
    • Eastern Amazon: Focusing on the arc of deforestation.
    • Southern Bahia: A biodiversity hotspot within the Atlantic Forest.
    • Vale do Paraíba: Encompassing the southeast biodiversity corridor of the Atlantic Forest.
  • Impact:
    • Climate Change Mitigation: Significant carbon sequestration through large-scale forest restoration.
    • Biodiversity Conservation: Re-establishing diverse and functional ecosystems, enhancing habitats for various species.
    • Local Development: Creating employment opportunities for local communities through restoration activities, training programs, and sustainable resource management initiatives.
  • Social and Economic Benefits: Supporting local economies by partnering with nurseries and promoting sustainable livelihoods such as açaí and bacaba fruit harvesting.
