Uber and BYD Partner to Deploy 100,000 Electric Vehicles Globally

Listen to this story:
  • Uber and BYD partnership aims to deploy 100,000 new BYD electric vehicles globally.
  • Drivers will access competitive pricing and financing options for BYD EVs.
  • Collaboration extends to developing autonomous-capable BYD vehicles for Uber.

Uber Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: UBER) and BYD Co. Ltd. have announced a strategic partnership to bring 100,000 new BYD electric vehicles (EVs) onto the Uber platform across key global markets. This initiative, starting in Europe and Latin America, will offer drivers best-in-class pricing and financing for BYD vehicles and expand to the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Uber operates the most extensive on-demand EV network globally, while BYD is a leading EV producer. This partnership aims to lower EV ownership costs for Uber drivers and introduce millions of riders to greener rides.

Despite the rapid adoption of EVs by Uber drivers, cost and financing remain significant hurdles. BYD vehicles, known for lower maintenance costs, superior battery performance, and a range of models, are ideal for ridesharing. The partnership may include discounts on charging, maintenance, insurance, and financing tailored to each market.

The companies will also work on deploying future BYD autonomous-capable vehicles on the Uber platform. Uber’s extensive mobility and delivery network positions it to bring autonomous technology to a broad audience.

Uber and BYD share a commitment to innovate towards a cleaner, greener world, and I am excited to work together towards that future,” said Chuanfu Wang, Chairman and President of BYD.

As the largest global agreement of its kind, we’re thrilled about the benefits this partnership will deliver for drivers, riders, and cities,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber. “When an Uber driver makes the switch to an EV, they can deliver up to four times the emissions benefits compared to a regular motorist, simply because they are on the road more. Many riders also tell us their first experience with an EV is on an Uber trip, and we’re excited to help demonstrate the benefits of EVs to more people around the world.

Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD and CEO of BYD Americas, added, “We are elated to join forces with a global leader like Uber to not only accelerate the transition to electric vehicles but also to make green transportation accessible and affordable for everyone. This collaboration marks a new era in the electrification of urban mobility, and we look forward to seeing our cutting-edge EVs become a common sight on the streets of cities worldwide.
