Amazon to Commit Over $1 Billion to Decarbonise Transportation Network Across Europe
  • Net-zero goal: Amazon’s largest electric truck order supports its pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.
  • Massive capacity: 200+ eActros 600 vehicles will transport over 350 million packages annually across the UK and Germany.
  • Infrastructure commitment: Amazon will install fast-charging stations and collaborate on external charging networks to enable long-haul electric trucking.

Amazon has announced its largest-ever purchase of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs), ordering over 200 eActros 600 trucks from Mercedes-Benz Trucks. These vehicles will join Amazon’s existing eHGV fleet later this year as part of the company’s climate commitment.

A Step Toward Net Zero

The order aligns with Amazon’s Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Amazon is focusing on route efficiency, scaling zero-emission transportation, and partnering with stakeholders to expand charging infrastructure.

We’ve announced our largest-ever order of electric heavy goods vehicles,” Amazon stated, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable logistics.

High-Impact Deployment

The eActros 600 trucks will operate on Amazon’s high-mileage middle-mile network in the UK and Germany, transporting trailers between fulfillment centers, sort centers, and delivery stations. Combined, these vehicles are expected to handle over 350 million packages annually.

Overcoming Infrastructure Challenges

Charging infrastructure for heavy vehicles remains a hurdle due to the distances trucks travel, charging speed, and power availability at strategic locations. To address this:

  • Amazon will install 360kW chargers at key locations, enabling 20%-80% charging in just over an hour.
  • Partnerships with stakeholders will help deploy external charging points for extended journeys.

This investment marks a significant milestone in decarbonizing Amazon’s transportation operations and setting a precedent for the logistics industry.
