Building on its legacy of innovation and sustainability, Samsonite International S.A. has announced a new science-based climate target, aligning with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) criteria. The commitment underscores the company’s aim to cut Scope 3 emissions—stemming from purchased goods and services—by 52% per unit of gross profit by 2030, based on 2022 levels. This target, currently submitted to SBTi for validation, applies to all brands under Samsonite’s umbrella, including Samsonite, Tumi, and American Tourister.

CEO Kyle Gendreau emphasized the company’s forward-looking approach:

“We are proud to leverage our leadership position to create a path towards a more sustainable future for the industry. We are partnering with our suppliers to significantly expand the use of recycled, lower-carbon materials while maintaining our long-standing commitment to durability.”

Tackling Scope 3 Emissions

With more than 95% of Samsonite’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions coming from its value chain—80% attributed to raw materials—the company is strategically focused on increasing the recycled content of plastics, aluminum, and other materials used in its products. This plan builds on Samsonite’s track record of integrating recycled content since 2018 and will leverage existing solutions to scale its efforts further.

Marina Dirks, Vice President and Global Head of Sustainability, noted:

“Since introducing our first product featuring recycled materials in 2018, we have continuously expanded their use into additional product components and collections. To achieve the emissions reductions, we look to further scale the use of recycled content, relying on solutions that we’ve already brought to market – which is why we are confident that we are able to meet our target.”

Sustained Renewable Energy Use

Samsonite achieved 100% renewable electricity across its global operations in 2023, surpassing its goal two years ahead of schedule. This milestone has helped reduce the carbon intensity of its operations by 85% compared to a 2017 baseline—far exceeding the 2025 target of 15%. The company continues to sustain this effort through onsite solar power, green power programs, and the purchase of Renewable Energy Certifications (RECs) and Energy Attribution Certificates (EACs).

This initiative is a cornerstone of Samsonite’s sustainability strategy, Our Responsible Journey, launched in 2020, which revolves around three main pillars: Product, Planet, and People. The strategy exemplifies Samsonite’s commitment to empowering journeys that contribute to a sustainable future.
