Bruce Carnegie-Brown (born December 27, 1959) is a globally recognized British business leader, best known as the former Chairman of Lloyd’s of London, one of the world’s oldest and most important insurance markets. With over four decades of experience spanning investment banking, insurance, private equity, and corporate governance, Carnegie-Brown has become a highly influential figure in global finance and risk management.

Early Life and Education

Bruce Carnegie-Brown was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and grew up across multiple countries, including Libya, Jordan, Tanzania, and Malaysia, due to his father’s engineering career. His international upbringing shaped his global perspective on business and leadership.

He attended Cheltenham College before earning a scholarship to Exeter College, Oxford University, where he graduated with First Class Honours in English Language and Literature in 1981.

Professional Career

Investment Banking

Carnegie-Brown began his career at Bank of America, before joining J.P. Morgan in 1985. Over nearly two decades, he rose to senior leadership, including Head of Asia-Pacific Investment Banking in Tokyo (1997–2000) and membership on J.P. Morgan’s global management committees.

Insurance and Private Equity

In 2003, he became CEO of Marsh UK, Europe and the Middle East, leading one of the world’s largest insurance brokers. Later, he joined 3i Quoted Private Equity as Managing Partner, pioneering activist private equity strategies in listed companies.
