Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners Acquires 480MW Morecambe Offshore Wind Project in the UK
  • Strategic Expansion: CIP’s acquisition of Morecambe boosts its UK renewable energy pipeline to over 25GW.
  • Advanced Development: Morecambe is well-positioned to support the UK’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan.
  • Partnership Continuity: Flotation Energy remains involved as a development partner, ensuring project stability.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its Copenhagen Infrastructure V (CI V) fund, has acquired full ownership of the 480MW Morecambe offshore wind project from COBRA Group and Flotation Energy, a TEPCO Renewable Power, Inc. subsidiary. The acquisition, pending customary approvals, strengthens CIP’s footprint in the UK’s renewable energy sector. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Project Significance:

Located 30km off Lancashire’s coast in the Eastern Irish Sea, Morecambe offers robust fundamentals and is already at an advanced development stage. The project was secured during the UK Offshore Wind Leasing Round 4 in 2021, with consent applications already submitted.

CIP’s Nischal Agarwal highlighted the strategic value, stating:
“CIP is very pleased to acquire Morecambe – a fixed bottom offshore wind project of excellent fundamental qualities, at an advanced stage of development, and well placed to contribute to the UK’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan.”

Building on Experience:

The acquisition aligns with CIP’s proven track record in the UK, including investments in the Beatrice Offshore wind farm (588MW) and ongoing developments at the Pentland (100MW) and Ossian Floating Offshore wind farms (3,600MW) in Scotland.

Broader Impact:

The Morecambe project will join CIP’s CI V flagship fund, which aims to deploy EUR 12 billion into renewable technologies such as wind, solar PV, and energy storage across Europe, North America, and the Asia Pacific.

Looking Ahead:

By integrating Morecambe into its portfolio, CIP reinforces its role in achieving the UK Government’s 2030 offshore wind target, contributing significantly to national energy infrastructure goals.
