Ferrari Shuts Gas-Fueled Plant Early to Double Solar Production 1
  • Trigeneration plant at Maranello shut down three months ahead of schedule, enabling a 60% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 CO₂ emissions.
  • Solar capacity to double from 5 MWp to 10 MWp by 2030, strengthening renewable energy supply.
  • Methane gas consumption reduced by 70%, aligning with Ferrari’s 2030 carbon neutrality goal.

Ferrari accelerates its transition to renewable energy by shutting down the trigeneration plant at its Maranello factory, advancing its decarbonisation efforts three months ahead of plan.

Early Shutdown Drives Emission Reductions

The decision to deactivate the gas-fueled trigenerator, operational since 2009, supports Ferrari’s commitment to a 60% annual reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO₂ emissions. Additionally, methane gas consumption will decrease by 70%, significantly lowering the factory’s carbon footprint. “Today, 30 September, is a historic date on Ferrari’s journey towards carbon neutrality by 2030,” said Benedetto Vigna, CEO of Ferrari.

Doubling Solar Capacity

To ensure uninterrupted electricity supply, Ferrari is doubling its photovoltaic systems from the current 5 MWp to 10 MWp by 2030. This expansion will enhance the share of self-produced renewable energy at the Maranello site, which currently meets 40% of the factory’s energy needs alongside renewable Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

Advanced Technologies Support Energy Transition

Ferrari has upgraded its electrical infrastructure, including a complete renovation of the electrical substation and the installation of three new 40 MVA transformers. These advancements support the integration of increased renewable energy sources and ensure a stable energy supply. “This means we will no longer use gas to produce electricity at this plant, but electricity from renewable sources,” Vigna added, highlighting the strategic shift towards sustainability.

Continuous Energy Efficiency Improvements

In 2023, Ferrari reduced its total energy consumption by 4%, down from 1,580 TJ in 2022 to 1,520 TJ. This reduction is part of ongoing technological and process innovations aimed at enhancing energy efficiency across the Group. The shutdown of the high-efficiency trigeneration plant, recognized by the Gestore Servizi Energetici (GSE) with white certificates for energy saving, marks a pivotal step in this journey.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

Ferrari’s comprehensive approach includes not only renewable energy adoption but also the installation of a fuel cell plant and the development of energy-efficient buildings. These initiatives collectively drive Ferrari towards its carbon neutrality by 2030 goal, demonstrating the company’s dedication to sustainable operations and environmental stewardship.
