Greece’s PPC Launches €5.75 Billion Green Energy and Data Center Transformation Plan

Greece's PPC Launches €5.75 Billion Green Energy and Data Center Transformation Plan
Listen to this story:

  • €5.75B in green energy and tech investment will transform Western Macedonia into a national and regional energy and data hub.
  • Up to 22,000 new jobs created across construction and operations phases.
  • 3,000+ MW in renewables + 860 MW storage will power Greece’s largest data center and redefine PPC’s energy legacy.

Western Macedonia is undergoing a radical transformation.

PPC Group’s €5.75 billion investment plan repurposes former lignite sites into a green energy and technology hub for Greece and Southeastern Europe.

PPC has always been, and will continue to be, deeply connected to Western Macedonia, a key driver of development and prosperity for the region and its people.” – Georgios Stassis, Chairman & CEO, PPC Group

What’s happening:

  • A 300MW mega data center is planned at the Agios Dimitrios power plant, powered entirely by behind-the-meter green energy.
  • Phase 2 could scale the facility to a 1,000MW giga data center, making it one of Europe’s largest.
  • PPC will invest €2.3B into this initiative, pending final agreements with hyperscalers.
  • The site offers key advantages: vast land ownership, grid infrastructure, cooling water supply, and ultra-fast connectivity via PPC FiberGrid.

Our investment plan will transform former lignite areas. The new era includes an installed capacity of over 3,000 MW of renewables… and 860 MW of storage capacity. This strategy serves as a catalyst for Western Macedonia to redefine itself through technology. PPC is a Powertech company – and its heart will beat in Western Macedonia.”Georgios Stassis

Massive job creation:

  • Up to 20,000 jobs during construction.
  • Up to 2,000 operational roles expected long-term.

I cannot describe in words how visionary and ambitious this plan is. It is a plan of global scope, not just on a European level… I am absolutely convinced that… we can all implement it together.” – Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Green energy at scale:

  • €1.2B in PV development on former mining sites (2,130 MW), enough to power 715,000+ homes.
  • €940M in energy storage projects (860 MW total), with two standout pumped hydro systems:
    • Kardia Mine PHS: €430M, 320 MW capacity (8-hour duration)
    • South Field Mine PHS: €310M, 240 MW capacity (12-hour duration)
  • 300 MW BESS deployed across Western Macedonia.
  • Green hydrogen: PPC and “Hellenic Hydrogen” to build Greece’s first industrial-scale production unit in Amyntaio.

Next-gen energy infrastructure:

  • Ptolemaida 5: Transitioning to a 350 MW natural gas OCGT by 2027, with future upgrade to 500 MW CCGT.
  • Kardia Units 3 & 4: To become synchronous condensers supporting Greece’s high-voltage grid.
  • A new waste-to-energy plant with 38 MW capacity is under permitting review. It will feature advanced emissions control and provide district heating.

Land restoration commitment:

  • €400M allocated for restoring lignite-impacted land and decommissioning obsolete facilities.
  • Of the 20,000 hectares PPC historically owned, 8,000+ hectares are being returned to the Greek State – fully rehabilitated.

This investment not only accelerates Greece’s clean energy transition—it positions Western Macedonia as a strategic European tech-energy node, attracting hyperscale players and redefining PPC’s role in a post-lignite economy.
