The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has unveiled its Sustainability Taxonomy, a digital framework that converts its sustainability reporting standards into machine-readable formats using XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language)—the global standard for digital business reporting.

“This is a practical, inclusive tool that helps ensure the GRI Standards remain world-leading and fit for purpose in an ever-evolving digital reporting world,” said Cristina Gil White, GRI Chief Engagement Officer. “It closes the gap between reported impacts and the people who need to interpret and act on them.”

The taxonomy covers the full suite of GRI Standards—Universal, Sector, and Topic—allowing organizations to digitally submit their sustainability data either directly to GRI or via an online form. This flexibility makes digital reporting more accessible regardless of company size or technical capacity.

Importantly, the taxonomy has been developed with a high degree of alignment with both ISSB and ESRS standards, enhancing compatibility for multinational reporting. By standardizing formats across jurisdictions, it positions GRI reporting as a cornerstone in global ESG disclosure practices.

“GRI’s new Sustainability Taxonomy marks an important advancement for digital sustainability reporting,” said John Turner, CEO of XBRL International. “It increases the trustworthiness and accessibility of information disclosed using the GRI Standards and is a milestone we are proud to support.”

To further accelerate adoption, GRI will release digital filing tools in 2025, enabling reporters to verify report consistency with GRI’s requirements. Additionally, the GRI Academy is developing training to equip organizations with the skills needed to transition into digital-first sustainability disclosure.

With this taxonomy, GRI is setting a new standard for data-driven, transparent, and globally compatible sustainability reporting.
