Iberdrola’s AI-Driven Energy Revolution

Iberdrola, a global leader in clean energy, has chosen Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider for generative AI workloads, signaling a strategic move towards greater efficiency and sustainability.

Iberdrola is harnessing AWS’s advanced technologies, including Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker, to develop over 100 generative AI applications. These tools are set to revolutionize internal processes, from customer interactions to energy production. “We see AI playing a central role in helping us to deliver the smart grid, renewables, and storage technology that will drive the energy transition forward,” said Sergio Merchan, global CIO at Iberdrola.

A newly established Generative AI Center of Excellence (CoE) allows Iberdrola’s employees to access leading AI models, streamlining tasks such as legal document analysis and real-time IoT data processing. This approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also empowers employees to solve complex issues with AI-driven insights.

With AWS Professional Services, Iberdrola is building a next-generation data platform to consolidate data from over 400 renewable energy sites. This centralized data lake, powered by AWS generative AI, enables real-time asset monitoring and predictive maintenance, significantly boosting operational efficiency. Howard Gefen, General Manager of Energy & Utilities at AWS, stated, “By harnessing AWS, Iberdrola can unlock new opportunities for innovation and efficiency across their operations.
