Inter Miami Launches MLS’ First Upcycling Initiative – Re-using Old Equipment to Make Jerseys

(re)boot and AKQA Bloom join forces to tackle the waste crisis in sports

AKQA Bloom & (re)boot have joined forces with Inter Miami to tackle the pressing issue of waste in sports. Together, they are launching an innovative platform that upcycles used sportswear, ushering in a new era of sustainability and environmental consciousness. This initiative builds upon the successful collaboration between (re)boot and Inter Miami marking their first venture into the realm of club partnerships.

Founded by Gabriella Mas, (re)boot is the only brand-agnostic material upcycling initiative working with an MLS club. It is on a mission to combat the global waste crisis by prolonging the lifespan of sportswear through a unique and scalable upcycling circularity process.

Leagues, clubs and athletes worldwide discard used sportswear and equipment every season. The professional sports industry is a leading culprit of the waste crisis, with items being used as little as twice per game. The MLS alone goes through roughly 13,000 pairs of boots and 5,000 balls per season.

For the 2023 season, (re)boot used discarded Inter Miami CF fútbol kits and created new uniforms for their training academy. Working with streetwear designer Justin Mensinger, the jerseys were debuted on the Academy team during Inter Miami CF’s match against the Chicago Fire at DRV PNK Stadium in March. (re)boot and Inter Miami will launch its first mascot in 2024, made entirely of repurposed club materials. A first for the MLS, and the fútbol industry.

Founder and owner of (re)boot, Gabriella Mas, said: “I’m excited to introduce (re)boot to the world. Combining the powerful forces of fútbol and fashion, we exist to ensure that no piece of sports equipment goes to waste. (re)boot is a restart, and together we can design a healthier planet and a circular future for all sports.”

In an industry where many sports material upcycling initiatives are driven by fast fashion, AKQA Bloom is proud to introduce a sports sector brand that is dedicated to making a positive impact on the world. To celebrate the launch of this groundbreaking platform, AKQA Bloom has conceptualized, created, and executed a remarkable brand campaign.

AKQA Bloom Founders and Executive Creative Directors, Jean Zamprogno and Fernando Pellizzaro, said: “This momentous partnership between Inter Miami CF, (re)boot, and AKQA Bloom is poised to redefine the future of sustainability in sports. By upcycling sportswear and inspiring change through innovative initiatives, we are paving the way for a legacy built on environmental responsibility and conscious consumerism”.
