Phlair, Carbon Removal AS Launch Europe’s First Large-Scale DAC and CO₂ Storage Project

Phlair GmbH and Carbon Removal AS, through its subsidiary NorDAC Kollsnes AS, have signed an agreement to develop Europe’s first large-scale Direct Air Capture (DAC) and geologic CO₂ storage facility in Øygarden, Norway. The site is strategically located next to the Northern Lights terminal, enabling seamless integration into permanent CO₂ storage infrastructure.

The agreement outlines a phased implementation beginning with the removal of 60,000 tonnes of atmospheric CO₂ annually, scaling up to 500,000 tonnes per year in the second phase using Phlair’s proprietary electrochemical DAC technology.

This cooperation with Phlair is highly promising because of the virtues of their DAC technology, such as energy efficiency and the battery-like characteristics of the core technology,” said Eirik Lilledahl, founder and chairman of Carbon Removal AS.

Phlair’s system is engineered for load-flexibility, making it compatible with fluctuating renewable energy inputs and capable of supporting stressed power grids. This design helps lower the cost of CO₂ removal while enhancing energy infrastructure.

We are excited to provide our load-flexible DAC technology for this European lighthouse project,” said Malte Feucht, CEO at Phlair. “Europe is at a turning point and can become a leader in carbon management. We are laying the foundation for large-scale, permanent carbon removal. Our ability to balance grid loads will accelerate and drive down cost for renewables in Norway. At the same time, we want to prove that cost efficient DAC is possible.”

Phlair will supply its proprietary Hydrolyzer modules and provide detailed engineering, installation, commissioning, and ongoing technical support. NorDAC will handle project development, infrastructure buildout, and operate the facility.

As part of the agreement, Carbon Removal AS will be Phlair’s exclusive DAC customer in Norway during the contract period, establishing a long-term partnership focused on scalable, permanent carbon removal aligned with Europe’s climate ambitions.
