Portugal’s Renewable Energy Milestone

Portugal’s renewable energy generation hit a record 71% in 2024, marking a significant leap from 61% in 2023, according to grid operator REN.

REN stated, “This achievement highlights the effectiveness of Portugal’s renewable energy initiatives.

Hydropower led with 28% of the electricity consumed, followed closely by wind at 27%. Solar power, while accounting for 10%, experienced the most significant growth, increasing by 37%. Biomass contributed an additional 6%.

Decline in Natural Gas Dependency

Natural gas consumption dropped 17%, reaching its lowest level since 2003, despite overall electricity use rising to its highest since 2010.

  • Natural gas now accounts for only 10% of power production.
  • Portugal relies on imports from Nigeria and the U.S. for nearly all its natural gas.

Renewables Driving Sustainability

Portugal’s commitment to green energy showcases its ability to transition from fossil fuels to renewables effectively. Solar power, in particular, underscores the country’s forward momentum in the global shift to clean energy.
