Salesforce Launches Nature-Focused AI to Help NGOs Tackle Climate and Biodiversity Crises
Listen to this story:

  • Nonprofits using Salesforce’s Agentforce AI platform are improving operational efficiency and reducing environmental impact — including a projected 20% drop in emissions for disaster relief organization Good360.
  • New Earth Month accelerator cohort focuses on forest conservation, regenerative agriculture, water access, and fair trade — with up to 125% improvement in mentorship reach and 40% less staff time required.
  • Salesforce’s broader AI strategy includes launching the AI Energy Score and advocating for sustainable AI policy to reduce environmental impact industry-wide.

Salesforce is integrating autonomous AI agents into its climate innovation efforts, positioning digital labor as a key enabler of scalable, nature-based solutions.

Through its Salesforce Accelerator – Agents for Impact, the company provides nonprofits with funding, technology, and pro bono expertise to build AI agents on its Agentforce platform. These agents perform tasks with minimal oversight, learning and adapting over time to reduce the operational burden and accelerate impact.

74% of nonprofits recognize the value of technology, but limited staff and funding often stand in the way of achieving their mission,” according to Salesforce research.

Agentic AI in Action

Organizations like Good360 and Groundswell are already leveraging Agentforce. Good360 is using it to better match disaster relief resources with families in need, targeting a 20% reduction in emissions. Groundswell is deploying an agent to streamline customer workflows and broaden clean energy access for underserved communities.

The accelerator’s Earth Month expansion introduces a new cohort focused solely on nature-based innovations:

  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is building a forest certification agent to expand access to FSC certification and accelerate responsible forest management.
  • Rare is launching a regenerative agriculture coach offering real-time, localized advice to 5,000 smallholder farmers. Expected outcomes include a 40% reduction in staff time and broader adoption of climate-resilient practices.
  • Fair Trade USA is using AI to proactively manage partner engagement, aiming to reduce partner decertification by 6%.
  • Global Water Center will provide WASH professionals with personalized resources, potentially boosting mentorship by 125%.
  • Ceres is developing an agent to help portfolio companies implement 500 sustainable actions, reducing the timeline for climate commitments by 33%.

We’re excited to see what these nonprofits can do with Agentforce as they scale nature-based solutions for the betterment of our planet,” said Salesforce.

AI for Sustainability and Transparency

Beyond nonprofits, Salesforce is investing in tools and policies that drive sustainability across the AI ecosystem. In partnership with Hugging Face, Cohere, and Carnegie Mellon, Salesforce launched the AI Energy Score, a benchmarking tool that compares AI model energy usage. Salesforce is the first company to publicly disclose the energy consumption of its proprietary AI models.

Transparency like that offered by the AI Energy Score is crucial,” said Ariane Thomas, Global Tech Director of Sustainability, L’OREAL Group. By openly sharing energy consumption data, our companies can collectively implement ecodesign practices and minimize the environmental footprint of AI technologies.”

Salesforce also published its Sustainable AI Policy Principles, designed to guide responsible AI regulation, and has backed the Transformational AI to Modernize the Economy (TAME) legislation to enhance weather prediction and response through AI.

The company’s integrated approach — pairing digital innovation with environmental responsibility — offers a replicable model for how AI can drive scalable, meaningful climate impact.
