TotalEnergies, Air Liquide to Cut 450,000 Tons of CO₂ Annually with Green Hydrogen in Northern Europe
  • 450,000 metric tons of CO2 reduction annually across TotalEnergies’ Dutch and Belgian refineries.
  • €1 billion investment in two large-scale electrolyzers to produce 45,000 tons of green hydrogen per year.
  • Strategic renewable energy use with TotalEnergies’ offshore wind farms supplying electrolysis projects.

The Deal:

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide are partnering to decarbonize European refineries by producing green hydrogen using offshore wind power. The collaboration includes two key projects:

  • A 250 MW electrolyzer in Zeeland, Netherlands, jointly developed by TotalEnergies and Air Liquide.
  • A 200 MW electrolyzer in Rotterdam, Netherlands, with a tolling agreement allowing TotalEnergies to convert renewable electricity into 15,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.

Why It Matters:

These projects will significantly reduce carbon emissions and support Europe’s transition to low-carbon industrial energy solutions. The hydrogen produced will replace conventional fossil fuel-derived hydrogen, cutting emissions at TotalEnergies’ refineries in Antwerp and Zeeland.

Financials & Timeline:

  • Total investment: Over €1 billion.
  • Operational dates: Rotterdam electrolyzer by end of 2027; Zeeland electrolyzer by 2029.
  • Funding strategy: Subsidy applications submitted under EU and national renewable energy programs.

Industry Impact:

Green hydrogen is seen as a key solution for decarbonizing heavy industries. However, high costs and uncertain demand have stalled some projects. TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne has emphasized a measured approach, using green hydrogen in refineries but waiting for higher demand before expanding to passenger vehicle refueling stations.

Executive Perspectives:

Vincent Stoquart, President, Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, stated:
“This partnership with Air Liquide marks a new step in our ambition to decarbonize hydrogen used in our refineries by 2030. By leveraging offshore wind energy, we reinforce our integrated electricity strategy.”

Emilie Mouren-Renouard, Air Liquide Executive Committee member, added:
“Flagship projects like these will play a key role in reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors. They also strengthen Europe’s leadership in renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production.”

Looking Ahead:

TotalEnergies aims to cut 3 million tons of CO2 emissions per year by 2030 through green hydrogen initiatives, aligning with EU clean energy targets and industry-wide decarbonization goals.
