Virgin’s Net-Zero Targets Approved by SBTi, Signaling Bold Climate Commitment

Virgin’s Net-Zero Targets Approved by SBTi, Signaling Bold Climate Commitment
  • SBTi validates Virgin’s net-zero pathway, aligning with climate science to halve emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050.
  • Virgin commits to a 90% reduction in scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 2050 across its value chain.
  • By 2029, 68% of Virgin’s licensees (by emissions) will set science-based targets.

Virgin Holdings Limited has received official validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its net-zero targets, confirming its emissions pathway aligns with the 1.5°C climate goal. This marks a critical milestone in the Group’s long-term commitment to “Changing Business for Good.”

This validation confirms that Virgin’s climate targets are aligned with what the science demands: rapid, deep cuts to emissions that help limit global temperature rise.”

The company’s key emissions targets include:

  • Reaching net-zero GHG emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.
  • Reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 (from a 2023 base year).
  • Reducing scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 90% by 2050.
  • Ensuring 68% of Virgin companies (by emissions) will have science-based targets by 2029.

These commitments align with global climate science, emphasizing urgency.

The science couldn’t be clearer – the world is dangerously close to breaching the 1.5°C temperature rise threshold… Halving global emissions by 2030 and hitting net-zero by 2050 isn’t just an ambition, it’s a deadline backed by science.”
