Zurich Insurance Secures 17,500 Ton Carbon Removal Deal with Nellie Technologies

Nellie Announces Major Carbon Removal Offtake Agreement with Zurich Insurance Group
  • Zurich Insurance signs a multi-year, multi-tonnage carbon removal agreement with Nellie.
  • Nellie’s bioengineered CO2 removal system scales from pilot to full deployment.
  • The deal strengthens corporate decarbonization efforts with verified carbon sequestration.

Zurich Insurance Group has secured a long-term carbon dioxide removal agreement with Nellie, marking a milestone in commercial-scale engineered carbon removal.

Why It Matters:

After three years of development, Nellie’s first major offtake agreement validates its bioengineered CO2 removal system. The company is scaling from pilot operations to full deployment, driving both environmental and economic benefits.

How It Works:

Nellie’s system produces biomass that absorbs CO2 as it grows, then converts it into biochar for use in UK agriculture. “Our operational system boundary allows us near-total control over the removal and sequestration process,” Nellie stated.

Corporate Climate Action:

Zurich’s commitment aligns with Nellie’s vision of carbon removal as a last resort. “Removing CO2 should only happen when an organization has done all it can to prevent their emissions in the first place. And this is what’s happening here,” Nellie affirmed.

The Bigger Picture:

This partnership showcases how carbon removal technology can be commercially viable and scalable. “Zurich’s approach to reducing their emissions profile is exactly why Nellie was built—’stop what you can and remove the rest,'” the company emphasized.

Nellie expressed gratitude to Zurich’s sustainability team, adding, “The muddy shoes suffered during their site visit over the summer was hopefully worthwhile!”
