Deloitte and dsm-firmenich have expanded their global collaboration to advance sustainable animal protein production through the Sustell platform, which calculates environmental impacts from the feed and farm sectors. This partnership aims to foster a more sustainable food system by promoting transparency and bridging silos in the food value chain.

Key Impact Points:

  • Enhanced Sustainability: Sustell platform aids in reducing the environmental footprint of animal farming.
  • Global Collaboration: Deloitte and dsm-firmenich bridge silos in the food value chain.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Addresses growing pressure for transparency and sustainability in agriculture.

Deloitte has announced an expanded collaboration with dsm-firmenich, innovators in nutrition, health, and beauty, to promote a more sustainable food system. This partnership focuses on developing and scaling new climate-positive solutions, aiding businesses in implementing future-proof strategies.

The collaboration centers on the Sustell platform, a Software as a Service (SaaS) designed to calculate the environmental impact of large-scale animal protein production. Sustell harnesses data from the feed and farm sectors, enabling precise assessment and improvements in sustainability practices. By identifying impact hotspots, it helps organizations reduce their environmental footprint.

Deloitte will expand and enhance Sustell’s reach, facilitating vital economic information flow across the value chain,” said Jorg Schalekamp, Partner, Consulting, Deloitte Netherlands. “This collaboration enables agricultural leaders to embed sustainability into their operations, driving a more sustainable global food system.

Animal farming is responsible for 14.5% of human-derived greenhouse gas emissions, with the agriculture sector being the largest contributor to global methane emissions. New regulations, such as the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, necessitate improved transparency in food production. Sustell offers tailored solutions to help food producers meet these requirements by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, nitrate pollution, and water usage.

Dr. David Nickell, VP of Sustainability & Business Solutions at dsm-firmenich, stated, “Sustell’s approach makes precise environmental accountability the norm, driving customer demand and opening new commercial opportunities while reducing environmental impact.

To further transform the food system, collaboration between the food and energy industries is crucial. Randy Jagt, Deloitte Global Future of Food leader, emphasized, “Our expanded relationship with Sustell is part of many cross-industry collaborations aimed at reimagining the food value chain and achieving net-zero goals.”
