Key Impact Points:

  • Carlsberg leverages Deloitte’s expertise to implement the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and EU taxonomy.
  • Deloitte helped Carlsberg conduct key analyses, including Double Materiality Assessments and Climate Scenario Risk Analyses.
  • Carlsberg’s new ESG tools and methodologies, developed with Deloitte, will ensure long-term sustainability management.

Carlsberg Group’s ESG Journey with Deloitte

As a global brewery leader, the Carlsberg Group has made significant strides in meeting its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets. A key part of this effort is the implementation of the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Deloitte Denmark has played a pivotal role in this process, providing resources and expert insights to balance compliance with proactive sustainability strategies.

Supporting ESG Reporting

Deloitte has been instrumental in helping Carlsberg prepare for the EU taxonomy, a system for comparing ESG financial KPIs across industries. Their support has included conducting crucial analyses, such as the Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) and Climate Scenario Risk Analysis.

Simon Boas Hoffmeyer, Vice President, Global Head of Sustainability at Carlsberg, underscores the importance of these tools:

“The DMA helps us understand both our impact on society and society’s impact on us. It also serves as documentation that we comply with CSRD.”

Navigating New Legislation

The CSRD doesn’t provide a clear roadmap, making it difficult for companies to interpret its requirements. Hoffmeyer explains that Deloitte’s partnership was crucial:

“The CSRD is new for everyone, so we couldn’t just follow another company’s lead. Deloitte’s experts worked closely with us, and together we developed methodologies for climate risk assessments and scoring consistency in the DMA.”

Finn Adser, Finance Director at Carlsberg, highlights Deloitte’s ability to simplify complex regulations:

“The CSRD has over 1,100 data points. Deloitte helped us create a methodology to focus on the most critical data for how society affects our business and vice versa.”

Deloitte’s work has gone beyond compliance. Their support allowed Carlsberg to create management tools that will be used long-term to track progress on its ambitious ESG goals.

“We now have tools that modulate risk and impact scenarios to guide us forward,” says Hoffmeyer. “And these tools are embedded in our processes, so we don’t need continuous external assistance.”

A Balanced Approach

Carlsberg’s collaboration with Deloitte has been instrumental in integrating sustainability leadership into the company’s operations. As Adser points out, balancing resources is key:

“We can’t hire dozens of new people to manage sustainability. With Deloitte, it felt like we were one team working toward the same goals.”

Carlsberg continues to push toward its 2030 and 2040 milestones with a clear path ahead, supported by Deloitte’s expert guidance.
