EU Launches Flight Emissions Label for Sustainable Air Travel
Listen to this story:
  • New Flight Emissions Label (FEL) provides transparent data on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for flights within and departing from the EU.
  • Passengers can compare emissions data starting July 2025 to make informed, sustainable travel choices.
  • Airlines adopting FEL must comply with harmonized methodologies overseen by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

The European Commission has introduced the Flight Emissions Label (FEL), a voluntary program offering airlines a standardized and transparent way to report flight emissions. Fully operational by July 2025, FEL allows passengers to view and compare greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions when booking flights, enabling informed decisions and discouraging misleading greenwashing claims.

This label ensures fair, harmonized emissions reporting and supports aviation’s net-zero goals,” the Commission stated.

How It Works:

The FEL employs a harmonized methodology that considers factors like aircraft type, average passenger count, freight volume, and aviation fuel used. EASA will oversee the process, using advanced international standards to ensure transparent and fair estimations based on real consumption data.

When searching for flights online, passengers will see a dedicated logo and emissions data for participating airlines, fostering greater accountability in the aviation industry.

Driving Change:

The initiative promotes:

  • Fair competition by holding airlines to consistent reporting standards.
  • Adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).
  • Fleet renewal and operational efficiency among airlines.

Next Steps:

By February 1, 2025, airlines operating within or departing from the EU can opt in by submitting required data to EASA. The first labels will be issued by July 1, 2025, and apply to flights in the 2025 winter season.

The Flight Emissions Label is part of the EU’s commitment to sustainability, offering a clear pathway to reducing the aviation sector’s carbon footprint while empowering passengers to choose greener travel options.
