Google Announces 4 New Global Partnerships to Replenish 8 Billion Gallons of Water Yearly by 2030
Listen to this story:
  • 112 water projects supported across 68 global watersheds, replenishing ~4.5 billion gallons in 2024.
  • Four new agricultural sustainability partnerships launched in Chile, California, Taiwan, and France.
  • Aim to replenish 120% of freshwater consumed by offices and data centers by 2030.

For World Water Day, Google released its 2025 Water Stewardship Project Portfolio summary report, highlighting progress and announcing four new global partnerships focused on sustainable agriculture.

Chile: Enhancing Water Security in Maipo Basin

In central Chile’s semi-arid Maipo Basin, farmers face severe drought impacting livelihoods. Google has partnered with Agua Segura and Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) to rehabilitate crucial water infrastructure, including storage reservoirs and irrigation canals, essential for smallholder farmers.

California: Dairy Industry Innovation

California’s dairy farms, supplying over 21% of U.S. milk, traditionally rely on flood irrigation. Through collaboration with Sustainable Conservation, Google is supporting a pioneering manure drip irrigation system, delivering nutrients directly to crop roots. This approach saves water, boosts crop yields, and protects vital groundwater.

Taiwan: Efficient Rice Cultivation

In response to water scarcity impacting Taiwanese rice farmers, Google teamed up with N-Drip for a pilot project in Changhua County. This precision gravity-powered drip irrigation system replaces traditional flooding, reducing water consumption and labor while safeguarding food security and farmer livelihoods.

France: AI-Driven Potato Farming

Partnering with xFarm Technologies, Google is advancing irrigation efficiency on potato farms in France’s Seine River basin. AI technology optimizes irrigation schedules based on crop needs and environmental data, conserving water, enhancing crop quality, and cutting resource use.

These partnerships underscore Google’s commitment to water stewardship and sustainable agriculture globally, using technology and collaboration to tackle critical water challenges.
