AI Advances in Flood Forecasting

Google’s Flood Hub is rolling out new tools to help experts assess flood risks more precisely. The latest updates include:

  • Inundation history maps: High-resolution flood risk assessments for improved planning.

Tech-Driven Relief in Nigeria

In June 2024, Google.org funded GiveDirectly and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to provide cash relief to 7,500 flood-affected people in Nigeria.

GiveDirectly used Google’s Flood API to track flood risks and deliver cash assistance in Kogi State ahead of peak flooding.”With Google’s historical data, we identified the areas most at risk of flooding,” says Federico Barreras, humanitarian manager at GiveDirectly.

The IRC used the same technology to aid 3,000 households in Adamawa State and is expanding this model to Northern Kenya.

Bangladesh: AI for Early Relief

In Bangladesh’s Jamuna River basin, GiveDirectly leveraged Google’s AI-powered forecasts to trigger anticipatory cash transfers before floods hit.

Families in high-risk areas received funds before the July flood season, allowing them to prepare.”We piloted a more precise approach—delivering anticipatory cash at the village level to reach the most at-risk communities before floods hit,” says Abir Chowdhury, interim country director, GiveDirectly.
