Ireland has announced a €15 million ($16.3 million) commitment to Brazil’s Amazon Fund, enhancing international efforts to halt deforestation and support sustainability in the world’s largest tropical rainforest.

The donation will be disbursed over the next three years, according to Brazil’s Environment Ministry.

The donation to the fund, which aims to stop deforestation and preserve the world’s largest tropical rainforest, will be made over the next three years,” Brazil’s Environment Ministry confirmed.

Ireland becomes the eighth country to back the Amazon Fund, joining major global economies such as Norway, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Switzerland, and Japan.

The Irish government has emphasized the importance of international cooperation in preserving the Amazon, a vital carbon sink for the planet,” the Ministry noted.

Managed by Brazil’s development bank, the fund has already financed 123 projects with investments totaling approximately $534.6 million (3.1 billion reais), targeting deforestation prevention, environmental monitoring, and sustainable development.

The announcement came during a meeting in São Paulo between Brazil’s Environment Minister Marina Silva and Ireland’s Transportation Minister Sean Canney.
