JPMorgan Appoints Chuka Umunna as Global Head of Sustainable Solutions & EMEA Head of Green Economy Investment Banking

ESG News reports that Chuka Umunna has been promoted to Managing Director, Global Head of Sustainable Solutions, and EMEA Head of Green Economy Investment Banking at JPMorgan. This strategic role places Umunna at the helm of JPMorgan’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investment banking practices, where he will lead a global team focused on advancing sustainable solutions for clients and facilitating access to sustainability-focused capital across equity, debt, and private markets.

A Multifaceted Career in Law, Politics, and Finance

Umunna brings over two decades of diverse experience to this role, having worked across law, politics, and finance. Before joining JPMorgan in April 2021, he served as the Global Co-Head of ESG at Edelman, a leading strategy and communications firm. His political career includes nearly a decade as the Member of Parliament for Streatham and a tenure as the UK’s Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, and Skills.

Responsibilities at JPMorgan

In his new capacity, Umunna will:

  • Lead ESG Investment Banking: Oversee JPMorgan’s global ESG and sustainability-related advisory and transaction support.
  • Drive Green Economy Initiatives: Coordinate the bank’s investment banking efforts for clients in emerging green sectors within EMEA.
  • Implement ESG Strategies: Oversee the integration of ESG principles into JPMorgan’s own operations and business activities across the region.

Past Roles and Expertise

Umunna’s previous roles have equipped him with a wealth of experience in ESG and sustainability. At Edelman, he led the firm’s ESG consultancy, and he has held non-executive director positions at BC Partners, Vista Equity Partners, and Digital Identity Net UK. His legal background includes working as a corporate employment lawyer at Herbert Smith Freehills LLP.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Umunna is a prolific contributor to various publications, providing insights on business and sustainability issues.
