Sweco to Design One of Europe’s Largest Battery Parks, "Green Turtle," Enhancing Belgium's Energy Resilience

Key Impact Points:

  • Sweco will design the Green Turtle battery park in Belgium with a substantial capacity of 700 MW and 2,800 MWh, equating to the energy needs of 385,000 households annually.
  • The project aims to bolster the energy grid by storing renewable energy, reducing dependency on gas during low solar and wind production periods.
  • Construction is set to begin in summer 2025, with the park expected to be operational by 2028.

Pioneering Energy Storage Solutions

Sweco, a leader in civil and electrical engineering, is set to design Green Turtle—one of continental Europe’s largest battery storage facilities—for GIGA Storage Belgium. This groundbreaking project will play a crucial role in Belgium’s transition to renewable energy by providing a robust solution to energy storage and grid reliability.

Strategic Design and Construction

The agreement concluded with our contractors, including Sweco, to be GIGA Storage Belgium’s partner for the design of the Green Turtle battery park comprises an important milestone. This is a flagship project for us in Belgium and an important project in realising the energy transition in Europe, where access to large-scale electricity storage plays a vital role,” stated Joeri Siborgs, General Manager of GIGA Storage Belgium.

The battery park, located in Dilsen-Stokkem, will store excess energy generated from wind and solar sources, allowing for its use during peak demand times, thereby enhancing the efficiency of renewable power sources and maintaining grid stability.

Commitment to Sustainable Energy Practices

“By taking on the responsibility for the integral design of the Green Turtle battery park, Sweco will support GIGA Storage in laying the foundation for a resilient and sustainable energy system. In Belgium and across Europe, Sweco’s experts are heavily involved in the expansion of renewable energy and in the adaptation of power systems and electricity grids, to support clients in meeting new capacity requirements as electrification intensifies,” explained Erwin Malcorps, Business Area President of Sweco in Belgium.

This strategic initiative not only supports Belgium’s energy independence but also sets a precedent for large-scale energy storage across Europe, underlining Sweco’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
