Womble Bond Dickinson Joins UN Global Compact to Advance Business Practice Goals

International law firm Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) has become a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), reinforcing its commitment to sustainable business practices and alignment with globally recognized environmental, social, and governance standards.
The UNGC, launched in 2000, is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, encouraging companies to align their strategies and operations with ten universal principles covering human rights, labour, environmental stewardship, and anti-corruption. Signatories also commit to advancing the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Embedding Sustainability into Legal Practice
By joining the UNGC, WBD formalizes its pledge to integrate the Compact’s ten principles across its strategy, governance framework, and corporate culture. Participation requires annual disclosure through a Communication on Progress (COP), enhancing transparency and accountability to clients, employees, and stakeholders.
For a global law firm, this step signals increasing institutional focus on embedding sustainability considerations within advisory services, risk management, and operational decision-making — particularly as regulatory scrutiny around ESG reporting, climate disclosure, and supply chain integrity continues to intensify across major jurisdictions.
Focus Areas: Targeted SDG Alignment
WBD has identified six priority Sustainable Development Goals where it believes it can generate meaningful impact:
- SDG 1: No Poverty
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
- SDG 4: Quality Education
- SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
- SDG 13: Climate Action
- SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
The firm’s emphasis reflects both its advisory capabilities and the growing expectation that professional services firms demonstrate leadership in governance, social equity, and climate resilience.
Leadership Perspective
Sally Dallow, Partner Lead for Responsible Business at WBD, said:
“This commitment highlights our unwavering dedication to responsible business practices and the advancement of sustainable development worldwide. By joining the UN Global Compact, we recognise the vital role businesses play in building a fairer, more sustainable future. Aligning with the UNGC enables us to embed internationally recognised principles into every aspect of our operations and contribute meaningfully to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

Why It Matters
Professional services firms play a multiplier role in the sustainability ecosystem. As legal advisors to multinational corporations, infrastructure developers, energy companies, and financial institutions, firms like WBD influence governance standards, compliance strategies, and transaction structures across sectors.
Joining the UNGC positions WBD within a global network of more than 20,000 participating companies and stakeholders committed to advancing responsible business conduct. It also strengthens the firm’s credibility with institutional clients increasingly prioritizing ESG performance, climate risk mitigation, and ethical governance in procurement and advisory relationships.
As regulatory frameworks such as CSRD in Europe and emerging climate disclosure regimes reshape corporate accountability, alignment with globally recognized sustainability principles is becoming not only reputationally beneficial — but commercially strategic.
