Amazon Expands Renewable Energy Partnership with Iberdrola, Secures First PPAs in Portugal and Spain
  • 476 MW of new renewable energy PPAs: Amazon expands into Portugal and Spain, growing its Iberdrola partnership to five countries.
  • 66,000 GWh enabled: Amazon has contracted more than 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola globally.
  • AI and cloud innovations: Iberdrola leverages AWS to optimize wind farm design, improve grid connections, and enhance weather forecasting.

Expanding Global Renewable Footprint

Amazon and Iberdrola, a leading clean energy provider, have expanded their renewable energy partnership with an additional 476 MW in power purchase agreements (PPAs). This brings their collaboration to five countries, reinforcing Amazon’s commitment to 100% renewable energy.

The new PPAs include Amazon’s first agreement in Portugal: 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex, the country’s largest wind farm set to begin construction in 2025. In Spain, Amazon secured 257 MW from two solar and wind projects, together generating 1,093 GWh of carbon-free electricity annually—enough to power 300,000 homes.

Aitor Moso Raigoso, Iberdrola’s EVP of Customer Business, highlighted the significance:
With Amazon, we have a partnership that truly matches our commitment to sustainable energy and accelerating the global energy transition.”

Amazon’s Renewable Leadership

Amazon, the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy (per BloombergNEF), has now secured more than 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola. These PPAs help match Amazon’s electricity consumption with 100% renewable energy, aligning with its goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Technology Driving Sustainability

Beyond renewable energy, Iberdrola is deepening its AWS partnership by adopting cloud-based AI and high-performance computing (HPC). AWS is helping Iberdrola:

  • Improve wind farm design using AI to optimize turbine placement.
  • Enhance weather forecasting across 400 wind farms worldwide.
  • Deploy a Virtual Desktop as a Service to streamline operations.

Amazon will purchase energy from three Iberdrola projects:

  • 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex (Portugal): A €350M investment, powering 128,000 homes.
  • 212 MW from Ciudad Rodrigo solar PV plant (Spain): A €200M investment, supplying 150,000 homes.
  • 45 MW from Valdemoro wind farm (Spain): Eleven turbines powering 48,000 homes.

With Iberdrola recognized as Europe’s top seller of PPAs for a second consecutive year (Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025), this partnership signals continued momentum in corporate clean energy investments.
