Amazon’s Sustainability Exchange Offers Free Decarbonization Tools, Mandates Supplier Commitment to Climate Goals

Amazon’s Sustainability Exchange, launched today, provides previously proprietary guidance to accelerate supply chain decarbonization. This initiative marks a significant step in Amazon’s journey to reach net-zero carbon by 2040.

Why It Matters:

We’ve built world-leading systems and solutions to tackle climate change,” said Kara Hurst, Amazon’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “Now, we’re sharing these resources to drive global progress.

Achievements:

Amazon has already rolled out over 24,000 electric delivery vehicles and achieved 100% renewable energy usage across global operations. Their HQ2 boasts LEED Platinum Certification, and new recycling technology for mixed plastics has been developed with NREL.

The Exchange: The Amazon Sustainability Exchange includes:

  • Carbon Measurement Playbook: Detailed steps for setting and achieving carbon goals.
  • Renewable Energy Guide: Insights from Amazon’s experience as the largest corporate renewable energy buyer.
  • Building Guide: Lessons from developing HQ2 and other certified buildings.
  • Water Stewardship Guide: Strategies for becoming water positive by 2030.

Supplier Engagement:

Suppliers contributing over 50% of Amazon’s Scope 3 emissions must now present decarbonization plans. Amazon will prioritize partnerships with those demonstrating real progress.

Community Effort:

With over 500 signatories of The Climate Pledge, Amazon invites more suppliers to join. “We need collective action to meet our net-zero goals and combat climate change,” Hurst emphasized.
