American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) has achieved a significant milestone in corporate climate action, with its emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This validation affirms that Amex GBT’s near and long-term targets align with the SBTi Corporate Net Zero Standard, positioning the company as a leader in the business travel industry for environmental responsibility.

Amex GBT’s commitment includes reaching net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its value chain by 2050. The company’s targets span across scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions, covering everything from its own operations to the wider supply chain.

Near-term targets include:

  • Reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 80% by 2030 from a 2019 baseline.
  • Reducing scope 3 GHG emissions by 30% within the same timeframe, which covers upstream activities such as purchased goods, transportation, and employee commuting.
  • Engaging 67% of airline suppliers by emissions to set their own science-based targets by 2028.

Long-term targets extend these commitments:

  • Reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% by 2050.
  • Achieving a 90% reduction in scope 3 emissions within the same period.

Paul Abbott, CEO of Amex GBT, emphasized the importance of addressing environmental challenges while continuing to leverage the economic and social benefits of travel. We will continue to lead the industry, working with our customers and partners to accelerate progress and meet our carbon reduction targets.
