Australian electricity giant Origin Energy (ORG.AX) has appointed a company insider, Tony Lucas, to take the helm as its Chief Financial Officer. Lucas, currently leading Origin’s future energy and technology division, is set to assume the CFO role on July 1st, 2024, succeeding Lawrie Tremaine who is stepping down after a seven-year tenure.

This move signifies Origin’s dual focus on internal talent development and its strategic push towards renewable energy sources. Lucas’ extensive experience in this burgeoning sector positions him well to steer Origin’s financial strategy during this critical transition.

Analysts see Lucas’ appointment potentially influencing Origin’s future acquisition landscape. It’s worth noting that Origin shareholders rejected a $10.6 billion takeover offer last December from a consortium led by Brookfield, a company with a strong presence in renewable solutions. Experts speculate that Lucas’ deep understanding of the renewable energy space could pave the way for a more successful deal with Brookfield in the future.

Lucas brings a wealth of experience to the table, boasting over 30 years in finance, strategy, and regulatory affairs. Since 2016, he has been a key member of Origin’s executive leadership team, spearheading the development of the company’s future energy strategy and its investments in technology and innovation.

Origin CEO Frank Calabria expressed his full confidence in Lucas, highlighting his profound understanding of the energy industry and his proven leadership within Origin. Lucas himself echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the significance of Origin’s leadership role in the energy transition and vowing to build upon the strong financial foundation laid by his predecessor.
