bp pulse Powers UK’s Largest EV Charging Hub, Accelerating Green Transition

bp pulse, The EV Network (EVN), and NEC Group have unveiled the UK’s largest public electric vehicle (EV) charging hub on the NEC Campus in the West Midlands, officially opened by Chancellor of the Exchequer, The Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt hailed the opening of the UK’s largest EV charging hub at NEC Birmingham, stating: “This is the biggest private investment in electric charging in the UK and is a huge vote of confidence in Britain’s role as a leader in green industries.”

“The ground-breaking site will be a major transport hub for the future and marks a significant step in our rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the country.”

The Gigahub™, situated for optimal accessibility near major roadways, will cater to seven million NEC Campus visitors and an annual traffic count of 60 million. It features 16 ultra-fast 300KW DC chargers, capable of simultaneously charging 30 EVs, and 150 7KW charging points, including designated accessible bays, to cater to diverse EV driver needs.

Paul Thandi CBE, DL Chairman of NEC Group, underscored their commitment to reducing environmental impact and facilitating lower carbon travel, stating: “This strategic collaboration and initiative strengthen our destination offer, demonstrate our commitment to reducing the impact our business practices and our Masterplan credentials have on the environment, and ultimately supports a reduction in carbon emissions.”

Akira Kirton, VP of bp pulse UK, emphasized their focus on accelerating the UK’s EV infrastructure development with up to £1 billion investment, with plans to roll out hundreds of hubs across the country, noting: “This new, nationally significant bp pulse Gigahub™ at the heart of the UK’s road network, is another great example of our strategy in action.”

Reza Shaybani, CEO of the EV Network, hailed the Gigahub™ as a game-changer for EV charging, stating: “The launch of the UK’s largest Gigahub™ is a massive game changer for EVN and a huge step forward for UK electric vehicle fast charging.”

Alexander Walsh, Senior Managing Director at Blackstone, praised the hub’s role in supporting the UK’s energy transition and creating green jobs, stating: “Blackstone has been invested in the NEC since 2018, and this development demonstrates the positive impact private investment can have in driving innovation.”

The Gigahub™ signifies a significant step in the UK’s transition to electric vehicles, supporting a more sustainable future.
