E.ON and MAN to Build Europe’s Largest Public EV Charging Network for Trucks

E.ON and MAN to Build Europe’s Largest Public EV Charging Network for Trucks

E.ON
  • 400 Charging Points Across Europe: 170 locations with 400 stations for electric trucks.
  • Germany’s Largest Network: 125 sites across Germany for public EV truck charging.
  • Operational by 2025: First site opens this year, 80 more by end of 2025.

E.ON and MAN Truck & Bus are spearheading the expansion of electric truck charging infrastructure in Germany and Europe. Their partnership will establish around 170 locations with approximately 400 charging points, making it the largest public charging network for electric commercial vehicles.

Leonhard Birnbaum, CEO of E.ON, emphasized the importance of this initiative:Electric mobility is crucial for reducing heavy commercial vehicle emissions by 90% by 2040. We’re investing heavily to boost the infrastructure for electric heavy goods transport, paving the way for sustainable logistics and green supply chains.

Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus, highlighted the need for infrastructure:To succeed in the mobility transition, we need 50,000 charging points for heavy commercial vehicles by 2030. Our partnership with E.ON is a significant step towards this goal, but we still need strong policy support.

The network will feature around 125 sites in Germany, with additional sites in Austria, the UK, Denmark, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. Sites will be located at strategic MAN service bases, designed with drive-through facilities to accommodate electric trucks and buses.

Sukhjinder Singh, CEO of E.ON subsidiary E.ON Drive Infrastructure, stated:Our partnership with MAN sets a new standard for electromobility in the commercial vehicle sector. Combining MAN’s service network with E.ON’s charging expertise, we are paving the way for a sustainable future in heavy-duty transport.”

The modular construction of the sites will start with 400-kilowatt charging stations, allowing electric trucks to recharge up to 300 kilometers in 45 minutes. Future upgrades will include the MCS megawatt charging system.

Friedrich Baumann, Executive Board Member for Sales and Customer Solutions at MAN Truck & Bus SE, pointed out:The right charging infrastructure is crucial for customers switching from diesel to electric. Our collaboration with E.ON will ensure the necessary infrastructure is in place.

The initiative aligns with Germany’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from heavy goods traffic by 55% by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2045. The EU aims to cut CO2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles by 65% by 2035 and 90% by 2040 compared to 2019 levels.

E.ON’s existing network of over 500,000 car charging points across Europe and its expertise in financing, site analysis, and grid connection will support this ambitious project. MAN is set to launch its first production-ready electric truck in 2024, with a daily range of up to 800 kilometers, and plans for electric city buses and coaches by 2025.
