Indonesia Boosts Energy Leadership to Deliver on $20 Billion Commitment

Listen to this story:

RMI and UID establish Happy Energy Action Leadership Program to deliver on Indonesia’s Just Energy Transition Commitments.

United in Diversity (UID) and RMI signed a memorandum of understanding, formalizing a partnership to launch the Happy Energy Action Leadership (HEAL) Program. Through the HEAL program, RMI and UID will equip an initial 30 to 50 stakeholders across various sectors with the critical skills and expertise needed to lead and enable Indonesia’s ambitious clean energy transition as part of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) commitment. Indonesian Minister of Coordinating Ministry of Maritime and Investment Affairs, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, attended the formal signing ceremony to show his support of the program.

Indonesia is on a transformative journey with the largest clean energy transition pledge in history. Supported by the International Partner Group (IPG), spearheaded by the United States and Japan, a cumulative $20 billion commitment has been dedicated to accelerating Indonesia’s clean energy transition, forging the foundation of JETP. Within this declaration, Indonesia has set ambitious goals of achieving nearly 34% renewable energy integration and capping power sector emissions at 290 MT of CO2 by 2030 and aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050. RMI is supporting the Government of Indonesia as a technical expert under the JETP Working Groups to define a clear path to achieving these ambitious goals. The HEAL program is designed to empower Indonesian leaders to design and implement the financial, technical, and policy solutions critical to achieving the vision outlined within the JETP, and to foster collaboration and synergy among local and national stakeholders. By cultivating shared learning, leadership, and technical expertise, HEAL aims to ignite collective action in energy transition projects implementation, laying the groundwork for a sustainable future.

HEAL will serve as a catalytic shared learning platform, bringing together stakeholders from diverse sectors to increase capacity, form strong coalitions, and foster robust regional energy governance. The program offers a unique opportunity for in-person and online learning journeys, including site visits to relevant local and international projects, where participants would gain invaluable insights into different models of energy transition and renewable energy implementations, further fueling their capabilities to drive real change.

Amb Tantowi Yahya, President of the United In Diversity Foundation added, “We are excited to launch the HEAL program in collaboration with RMI and UID. The HEAL program will be beneficial in helping to build and strengthen the ecosystem to scale and leverage regional knowledge and multi-stakeholder collaboration toward sustainable development.”

“Collaboration and synergy are crucial to empower global energy leaders with the know-how to fast-track the clean energy transition,” said RMI’s CEO, Jon Creyts. “Through the HEAL Program, alongside UID, RMI hopes to support Indonesia in delivering on its bold, historic climate commitments and inspire other nations to work collectively for more sustainable growth.”
