Poland is setting sail on a significant green energy initiative, launching a nearly €5 billion ($5.46 billion) loan program aimed at bolstering offshore wind projects on the Baltic Sea. This program is financed by the European Union’s recovery funds, marking a crucial step in Poland’s energy transition.

Strategic Partnerships and Capacity Goals

Developers, including major consortia like Polish state-controlled utility PGE with Orsted, and refiner Orlen with Northland Power, are leading the charge. Together, they plan to establish 5.9 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity by 2030, significantly contributing to Poland’s renewable energy landscape.

Key Support from National Recovery Plan

“The start of the funding programme is a consequence of the agreement between the ministry and BGK, one of the milestones of the national recovery plan,” the state assets ministry highlighted. This financial backing is pivotal for projects exceeding 300 megawatts (MW) of capacity and will proceed without requiring European Commission approval, streamlining the process for developers.
