Bloomberg Philanthropies Partners with U20 to Boost Urban Climate Action at G20 Summit

Key Impact Points:

  • U20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro will gather hundreds of mayors and delegates ahead of the G20 to drive climate action and urban financing.
  • Bloomberg Philanthropies’ support will ensure global participation and enhance collaboration on climate goals before COP30 in Brazil.
  • Cities will showcase urban solutions to influence the G20’s approach to global climate and social challenges.

Global Collaboration for Urban Climate Leadership

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced its partnership with the Urban20 (U20) to support the upcoming U20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, November 14-17, 2024. The event will bring together hundreds of mayors, delegates, and partners to accelerate multilevel partnerships and urban climate action. The Summit is strategically scheduled just before the G20 Leaders’ Summit and aims to elevate urban contributions to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) before COP30 in 2025.

Michael R. Bloomberg, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Climate Ambition, emphasized, The more we work together, the greater chance we have of stopping the worst effects of the climate crisis.”

Elevating Urban Contributions to the G20 Agenda

The U20 initiative, co-chaired by Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes and São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes, is an engagement group that brings cities together to influence G20 discussions. By uniting urban leaders, the U20 is pushing for the inclusion of urban solutions and climate commitments in the G20’s negotiations.

Mayor Eduardo Paes remarked, This summit is more than a gathering; it is a vital platform for showcasing urban solutions and influencing the G20’s response to the urgent challenges facing our cities today.”

Partnering to Shape Climate Action

Bloomberg Philanthropies’ support will ensure the participation of mayors from around the world, enabling cities to present innovative urban solutions and align efforts with national governments. “The U20 summit offers São Paulo and cities worldwide an opportunity to take our local successes to the global stage,” said Mayor Ricardo Nunes.

With Brazil holding the G20 Presidency and preparing to host COP30, the U20 Summit is set to shape the global climate agenda. Cities such as Rio and São Paulo are already implementing projects like solar energy initiatives and large-scale urban parks, demonstrating the power of local climate action.

Next Steps: The U20 Communiqué

The Summit will culminate in the U20 Communiqué, which will be presented to the G20 Presidency. It will include recommendations on social inclusion, climate action, and sustainable urban development financing, building on earlier discussions with over 30 mayors in São Paulo.
